INDIANAPOLIS – Heading into Summit League play this weekend the IUPUI men's tennis team was looking to continue its positive momentum after a 6-1 win over Wright State on Thursday, but inner-city rival Butler proved to be too much as the Bulldogs downed the Jaguars, 6-1, at the Butler Outdoor Courts.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 8-15 on the season, while Butler upped its record to 6-13.
Butler claimed 8-6 and 8-4 wins in the top two doubles matches to jump out to the 1-0 lead, before Sam O'Neill defeated
Jac Newis at one singles to move Butler's lead to 2-0.
Alex Toliver got the Jags on the board posting 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 win over Brandon Woods at two singles, but straight-set victories for the Bulldogs at the three and four positions clinched the victory.
In the final two matches, both
Thomas Gans and
Marcus Nalley bounced back from first-set losses to force third-sets, but Gans lost a 10-7 in the third-set breaker while Nalley dropped a 6-4 third-set decision resulting in the 6-1 outcome.
The Jaguars return to action on Saturday, April 11, when they welcome Omaha to the West Indy Racquet Club for a 2 p.m. match.
