INDIANAPOLIS – A night after a tough 4-3 loss to UIC, the IUPUI men's tennis team bounced back in a big way with a 6-1 Summit League victory over South Dakota State at the West Indy Racquet Club.
The win improved IUPUI to 7-12 overall and kept the Jags perfect at 3-0 in the conference.
In doubles action, South Dakota State won at the top spot, 8-3, while IUPUI's tandem of
Jose Calero and
David Beasley earned an 8-0 win at three doubles to turn all the attention to the second doubles match. The match went down to the wire and in a tiebreaker,
Akshay Verma and
Adam Reinhart won 7-5 to give IUPUI the early 1-0 lead.
South Dakota picked up a win at the No. 1 singles position, but the Jaguars depth proved to be the difference as they took the remaining five of six singles matches.
Alex Toliver and Reinhart each won in straight sets – 2 and 4, and 5 and 3, respectively – while Beasley overcame a first-set loss to win in a third-set breaker.
Verma and Calero then closed out the bottom of the lineup with straight-set wins to finish off the win.
The Jags close out a busy weekend on Sunday, March 29, when they head to Evanston, Ill., to take on No. 19 Northwestern. The match is set for a 6:30 p.m. start.
