Jags take the doubles point and four of the six singles matches to start league play 1-0

3/14/2015 6:09:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – Coming off a tough 5-2 loss at Ball State Friday night, the IUPUI men's tennis team looked to get back on track Saturday in its Summit League opener against Fort Wayne and the Jags did just that posting a 5-2 victory over the Mastodons at the West Indy Racquet Club.

With the win, IUPUI is now 1-0 in league play and 5-11 overall, while Fort Wayne dipped to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

Similar to Friday night's match at Ball State, the Jags started strong in doubles with its top duo of Patrick O'Neill and Alex Toliver cruising to an 8-2 win at the top spot. The Mastodons made things interesting with an 8-6 win at the second position, but David Beasley and Jose Calero countered with an 8-6 win of their own at the third slot to give the Jags the 1-0 lead.

In singles play, IPFW evened things up with Guell winning in straight sets at the No. 1 position, but the Jags would take four of the next five matches to finish off the win.

Both Toliver and Beasley won in straight sets at the two and four positions, and the final three matches all went to three sets with IUPUI taking two of the three matches. Adam Reinhart and Akshay Verma both dropped their first sets before rebounding with second-set wins to send their matches to decisive third sets. In the third sets, Reinhart and Verma both claimed 6-2 wins to finish off the victory.

The Jags return to action on Friday, March 20, when it hosts Western Illinois at the West Indy Racquet Club. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
