Box Score 2 CROWN POINT, Ind. – Behind complete games from
Brooke Boetjer and
Emili Escamilla, the IUPUI softball team picked up a pair of wins over Youngstown State Friday afternoon at the Sparta Dome in Crown Point, Ind., to extend its winning streak to four games.
Boetjer gave up two hits and walked two while striking out 10 in the opener as the Jags earned a 4-0 victory, before Escamilla struck out a career-high 11 en route to the Jaguars claiming a 9-4 victory in Game 2. The doubleheader sweep upped the Jaguars record to 8-3.
The top half of the order did all the damage in Game 1 with
Ali Mosier,
Sarah Lawrence,
Roni Patterson and
Taylor Chitwood each driving in a run. Chitwood's and Patterson's RBIs came on one-out solo home runs in the second and third innings, respectively, while Mosier and Lawrence each tallied their RBI's in the fifth on RBI doubles.
The Penguins threatened in the opening inning against Boetjer picking up two one-out singles before a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. A walk and an IUPUI error in the fourth again put the Jags in a difficult situation, but two more strikeouts from Boetjer left a runner on third to keep the Jaguars two-run lead at the time intact.
The rest of the way, Boetjer walked one and retired the side in order four times to earn her fifth complete game of the season.
While it was the top of the order that produced the runs in Game 1, the bottom of the order did most of the damage in Game 2 highlighted by
Maggie Good's two home runs and three RBI. In addition to Good,
Megan Cory followed Good with a home run in the fifth to close out the five-run win.
IUPUI struck in the first when three walks loaded the bases with nobody out and
Eryn Dillon delivered a two-RBI single to open the scoring. Unfortunately for the Jags, that would be all the runs they would score in the inning and Youngstown State came back in its half of the first to score three runs on two hits.
The Jags scored five unanswered runs – two in the second and three in the third – to open a 7-3 lead going to the bottom of the third, and the trio of runs in the third came with two outs on a two-run homer from Good and a RBI double from Mosier.
YSU cut into the deficit with a run in the third, but that would be the last time they scored as Escamilla picked up seven strikeouts in the final four innings to get out of some jams preserving the five-run win.
IUPUI will have a day off before heading to Rosemont, Ill., on Sunday, March 1, to take on Northern Illinois and Indiana State at the Rosemont Dome.
