INDIANAPOLIS - Junior MeKenzie Hilsmeyer continued her hot start to the 2015-16 season on Monday (Oct. 5), carding an opening round 71 at the Butler Fall Invitational at Highland Country Club on the city's north side. With Hilsmeyer at the top of the lineup, the Jaguars shot an opening round 300 and is two shots off the lead.

Hilsmeyer holds a one-shot lead over the field as SIU Edwardsville's Madison Frerking is second overall at 2-over 72. Four others are tied at 3-over 73, including junior Erin Ingram.

Hilsmeyer's 71 was a career-best round and tied for the sixth-best single round in IUPUI history. Her day included a stretch of four straight birdies and a birdie putt opportunity that could've been a fifth. She got to 3-under with the fourth birdie before finishing at 1-over.

"MeKenzie is going to try and figure out how she can do win the tournament. She's put herself in position, so I'm interested to see how she plays with the lead," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "MeKenzie wants to win, Erin wants to win, (Toledano) wants to win.

"The girls are right where they want to be."

Sophomore Nicole Toledano continued to show promise in her second collegiate season, shooting 5-over 75, tied for tenth overall.

"She's a grinder. She wants to succeed," Andrews said. "I'm sure she'll be nervous because she wants to do well, but she's worked on her game and gotten better."

Sophomore Aneta Abrahamova and freshman Lindsey Hackleman are tied for 35th overall after both shooting 81. It's Hackleman's first-ever appearance in the IUPUI lineup after playing the recent Ball State Cardinal Classic as an individual.

Junior Lindsey Budnik led the Jaguars' three individual entries with a 78 on Monday while Sara Saetre shot 82.

"Budnik played well today. She's getting better," Andrews said. "She's becoming a good player and that'll only make us deeper."

Indianapolis, which won the NCAA Division II national title last season, leads the field after shooting 298. Host Butler is third at 303, followed by SIUE (311) and Evansville (315).

Play will resume with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday (Oct. 6).
