WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Playing its third match in four days, the IUPUI men's tennis team put forth a strong effort against No. 48 Purdue, but the Boilermakers were too much as they defeated the Jaguars 6-1 Monday evening.
The loss dropped the Jags to 0-3 on the season, while Purdue improved to 2-0.
The Boilermakers took the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches to jump out to a 1-0 lead and even though the doubles point had been decided, the team of
Jose Calero and
David Beasley came through with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Unfortunately for the Jags, Purdue took the first four singles matches to clinch the team victory.
Despite the outcome being determined, in his first singles match as a Jaguar
Marcus Nalley was impressive from start to finish en route to a 7-5, 6-1 victory at the No. 5 position over Lucas Dages.
Jac Newis looked to add another point and was in good position at the top spot winning the first set of Ricky Medinilla, 6-4, but Medinilla bounced back with 6-1, 6-2 wins in sets two and three to finish off the win.
Up next for the Jags is a busy weekend in Milwaukee and Chicago. IUPUI takes on Cardinal Stritch and Marquette in Milwaukee on Friday, Jan. 23, before heading to Chicago to take on DePaul and Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 25.
