INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI men's tennis team kicks off its 2015 Spring campaign this weekend when it hosts a pair of matches against Cleveland State and Dayton at the West Indy Racquet Club.
Friday's match against the Vikings will start at 7 p.m., and Saturday's match will begin at 5:30 p.m.
"We are excited to get the spring season going. We have an extremely challenging schedule that will hopefully prepare us for a run at a conference title," head coach
Brandon Currie said. "I've noticed a new focus and commitment to excellence from this year's team and I believe we have all of the elements necessary for success. We have a lot of guys on our team ready to compete and meet these challenges."
The 2015 edition of the Jags features five returners, including two seniors in
Patrick O'Neill and
Thomas Gans.
Alex Toliver, the team's leader in singles wins a season ago, also returns along with sophomores
Akshay Verma and
Manuel Laboy.
The rest of the roster is filled with talented newcomers, including senior
Adam Reinhart who joined the program this fall after transferring from DePaul. Reinhart isn't the only transfer to join the Jags this year as
Jose Calero and
Marcus Nalley also joined IUPUI this fall after spending time at other institutions.
The remaining five newcomers -
Jac Newis,
Thomas Hulme,
Bradley Luetschwager,
Matt Moe and
David Beasley - are true freshmen.
The Jaguars were recently picked to finish fifth in the Summit League Preseason Poll after advancing to the Summit League Tournament for the fourth consecutive year last season. However, the Jags had their streak of three straight appearances in the conference championship match snapped with a loss to eventual tournament champion Denver.
