OXFORD, Ohio – After falling behind two sets to none, the IUPUI volleyball team took set three to extend the match but they could not prolong the match further falling to tournament host Miami University, 3-1.

Kaitlyn Hickey and Kelly Wachtel led the way with 15 and 14 kills, respectively, but the Jags collectively posted 45 kills compared to 62 for the RedHawks.

"I was very disappointed with our effort tonight, especially after a good win a few nights ago," head coach Steve Payne said. "We need to learn to come on the court with a better determination to win. Miami had a good offense that attacked our weak spots."

Playing in front of its home crowd for the first time this season, Miami took a slim lead early in the set only to have the Jags come back to even the score four times. Unfortunately, each time the Jaguars tied things up, the RedHawks won the next point refusing to allow the Jags to take the lead. With the score tied at 17, a Miami kill and two IUPUI attack errors propelled Miami in front, 20-17. The Jaguars closed within one twice, but they couldn't get over the hump as they dropped the opening set, 25-22.

Three kills and a pair of aces from Hickey led the Jags to a 14-9 advantage midway through the second set. Despite Miami closing in late in the set, IUPUI still had two opportunities to win the set but a RedHawks block and a Jaguars blocking error spoiled both opportunities. Miami had its first set point opportunity at 26-25, and it used a bad set from the Jags to secure the 27-25 come-from-behind win.

Out of the break, five RedHawks errors helped IUPUI seize the early advantage and then back-to-back solo blocks from Gabby Fisher and Kori Waelbroeck later in the set opened a 15-9 cushion. Similar to set two, Miami rallied and closed within one at 20-19, but this time a four-point Jags spurt re-established a 24-19 lead. Following a Jaguars attack error, a Wachtel kill closed out a 25-20 IUPUI win in set three.

Two kills apiece from Wachtel and Hickey carried the Jags to an 8-5 lead in set four, but a response from Miami in which it took eight of the next 10 points catapulted it in front, 13-10. The Jaguars were able to close within two a handful of times, but the RedHawks always had a response and they used a late surge to finish off a 25-20 win in set four to win the match.

The Jaguars conclude the Miami Invitational on Saturday when they take on Ohio State and UAB at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
