Rob van de Vin got off to a hot start on Thursday (May 15) at par-72, 7,151-yard Rich Harvest Farms in suburban Chicago. However, a troublesome back nine led to the Netherlands-native closing at 11-over 83 after his opening 18 holes.
The 2014 Summit League Championship MVP sits tied for 65th overall among the 75-player field heading into Friday's second round.
van de Vin opened the day with back-to-back birdies on No. 1 and 2, before giving back shots with consecutive bogeys on 5 and 6. He rebounded with a birdie on the 532-yard, par-5 No. 7 to close his front nine at 35. At that juncture, van de Vin was among only a handful of players to be under par and was one shot off the lead.
However, the back nine didn't treat him as well as he made a bogey on 10 and a double bogey on the par-3 13th. After back-to-back bogeys on 14 and 15, van de Vin made par on 16, but finished the day by making eight on both 17 and 18.
Illinois' Brian Campbell leads the field at 3-under 69 and Jacksonville State's Pablo Torres is second at 2-under 70. No. 21 UAB leads the team scoring at 4-over 292 and No. 9 Illinois is one shot back at 293.
van de Vin is slated to tee off at 10:50 a.m. Eastern on Friday (May 16) morning.
