MITCHELL, S.D. – A balanced offensive attack that featured seven players driving in runs led the IUPUI softball team to a 12-8 victory over South Dakota State Sunday afternoon helping the Jaguars complete the three-game sweep over the Jackrabbits.
Sarah Lawrence led the way with four RBI and
Cassie Vodde pitched 5.1 innings of relief to earn the win and extend the Jaguars winning streak to four games evening their record at 15-15 overall and 4-4 in the Summit League. It marked IUPUI's first conference sweep since the 2010 season when the Jags swept Southern Utah on April 9-10.
"It's great to come away with a conference sweep and I think it gives us a lot of confidence going forward," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "I was proud of our approach at the plate this weekend, and while we need to clean some things up defensively, we got big outs when we needed to."
The Jackrabbits got out to an early lead scoring one run in their half of the first, but the Jaguars offense picked up where it left off a day earlier in the top of the second.
While IUPUI used its power to score runs in the first two games, the Jags found the holes in the defense and used their legs to score five times in their second at-bat.
Taylor Chitwood led off the inning with a single to right field, and then a Jackrabbits error and a walk to
Angela Bartucci on consecutive at-bats loaded the bases.
Aundria Basquez delivered a two-RBI single to put IUPUI in front, 2-1, and
Lindsey Richards added a RBI-single of her own to up the cushion to 3-1.
Richards proceeded to steal second to put two runners in scoring position for
Sarah Lawrence, and that paid off as Lawrence plated a run with an RBI-single up the middle boosting the lead to 4-1. Two batters later,
Morgan Schlobohm got in on the action and capped off the scoring with a RBI-single through the left side moving the Jags advantage to 5-1.
Just as the Jaguars looked to be in control, The Jackrabbits scored five runs with two outs in the bottom of the second, four of which came on a grand slam from Elyse Eitel, to retake their one-run lead, 6-5, entering the third inning.
The Jags didn't waste much time getting that run back and more in the third. Patterson led the inning off with a single and then found her way to third via a throwing error during her steal of second. Bartucci then plated Patterson on a single to even the score at six, but unfortunately she was thrown out at second trying to turn her single into a double. Basquez and Richards added back-to-back singles to keep the threat alive, and Lawrence made SDSU pay when she blasted a three-run homer to catapult IUPUI back in front, 9-6.
The inning continued when Mosier and Schlobohm reached base on an error and single, respectively, and both runners moved up a base on a double steal. Both Mosier and Schlobohm scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Maggie Good during the next at-bat to finish off the six-run third inning as the IUPUI advantage grew to 11-6.
Following a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, the Jackrabbits added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close within three, 11-8.
The Jags received an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single from Mosier, and in the bottom of the inning Vodde worked around a lead-off double without surrendering a run to complete the 12-8 IUPUI victory.
The Jags are back in action on Wednesday, April 9, when it hosts in-state rival Indiana State for a doubleheader at the IUPUI Softball Complex. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3 p.m. ET.
