MITCHELL, S.D. – A nine-run inning in Game 1 and an eight-run inning in Game 2 propelled the IUPUI softball team to a doubleheader sweep over South Dakota State on Saturday in Mitchell, S.D.
The wins improved IUPUI's record to 14-15 overall and 3-4 in The Summit League, while SDSU dipped to 7-20 overall and 2-6 in the conference.
Maggie Good delivered two homers in the opener and drove in five runs leading the Jaguars to a 14-4 win, while both
Ali Mosier and
Roni Patterson drove in three runs apiece in Game 2 helping the Jaguars post a 15-3 victory.
"We were really aggressive at the plate today and that helped us get out to early leads in both games," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "I thought our energy was great and hopefully we can finish the series tomorrow the same way we started."
A non-eventful first inning featured both sides being set down in order, but a huge second-inning put IUPUI in front for good in the opener.
The Jags brought 12 batters to the plate in the second, managed seven hits and scored nine times to open a commanding 9-0 lead. During the inning,
Lindsey Richards recorded a RBI single,
Aundria Basquez and Mosier each delivered two-RBI singles and
Taylor Chitwood registered a two-RBI double, but the damage was capped off by a two-run homer from Good giving IUPUI the comfortable cushion.
In the circle,
Jocelyn Oppenhuis followed up her offense's big inning with a routine 1-2-3 second, before SDSU took advantage of an IUPUI error in the third to score an unearned run and climb within eight runs, 9-1.
Both teams scored in the fourth with Richards plating IUPUI's run on a RBI double to left field, but another home run from Good, this time of the three-run variety, in the fifth upped the Jags advantage to 14-2. The two homers for Good marked her first career multi-home run game of her career and the first for the Jaguars this season.
The Jacks scored two in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 14-4, but Oppenhuis finished the game with a strikeout, her ninth of the game, to finish off the Game 1 win.
Following an impressive Game 1 victory, the Jags used another big inning in the first inning of Game 2 to take a big lead before the Jacks could even reach the batter's box. The Jaguars scored eight runs on five hits and one SDSU error in the opening frame highlighted by a two-RBI single from
Angela Bartucci and a three-run home run from Mosier.
SDSU scored once in its half of the first, but the Jaguars got that run back in the second when Patterson drove in Good on a RBI double to move the lead back to 9-1.
After
Cassie Vodde escaped the second without giving up a run, the Jags opened up a 14-1 advantage in the third thanks in part to a two-run blast from Patterson.
The Jacks added runs in the third and the fourth to offset an IUPUI run in its half of the fourth, but Vodde went all five innings and struck out five to ultimately earn the victory as the Jags claimed Game 2, 15-3.
The Jags and Jackrabbits conclude their three-game set on Sunday, April 6, at 1 p.m.
