OMAHA, Neb. – After being held to just one hit in an 8-0 loss in the opener of its three game Summit League series against the host Omaha Mavericks on Friday at Westside Field in Omaha, Neb.,
Jocelyn Oppenhuis returned the favor in Game 2 throwing a one-hit shutout to lead the Jags to a 6-0 victory to salvage a doubleheader split.
Oppenhuis faced two more batters than the minimum and gave up just one walk and one hit in seven innings of work while striking out six to pick up the much needed win for the Jags.
"It all starts on that mound and once [Jocelyn Oppenhuis] threw that first pitch, I knew we would win Game 2," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "Omaha has a really good offense, and for her to be able to shut them down the way she did was really impressive."
The split kept IUPUI just one game back of Omaha in the conference standings and improved its overall record to 20-18, marking the program's first 20-win campaign since 2005.
"For us to get to 20 wins is great, but it's just a part of the process," Rivera said. "We have continued to improve throughout the season, but 20 wins was not a goal for us. We have other goals we want to reach and in order to achieve those goals we need to be playing our best softball in May."
Omaha took the opener by an 8-0 margin behind a one-hit performance in the circle from Dana Elsasser. That one hit came from the first batter of the game,
Ali Mosier, on an infield single, but after she was stranded on third in the first the Omaha offense took over.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the first and two runs apiece in the second and third to take an 8-0 lead.
The Jags managed to put one more runner on base, which came via a walk to
Sarah Lawrence to lead off the second, but Elsasser retired the next 12 batters to finish off the 8-0, five-inning victory.
Despite being shutout for the first time in Summit League action this season, the Jaguars quickly shook off a tough Game 1 performance in Game 2 when
Roni Patterson delivered a two-out, solo home run to center field in the bottom of the first to place the Jags on top, 1-0.
After Oppenhuis set down the side in order in the Omaha half of the first, both pitchers allowed just one runner to base over the next three innings resulting in IUPUI remaining in front by one run heading to the fifth.
In the fifth, Oppenhuis received more run support when
Lindsey Richards hit a two-out, solo home run to center field to double the lead to 2-0.
A 1-2-3 bottom of the fifth for Omaha kept Oppenhuis' no-hitter in effect through five, and she picked up another run from her offense in the sixth when Mosier re-entered the game and blasted a lead-off solo home run to center field to up the cushion to 3-0.
Oppenhuis' no-hit bid ended on a bunt single to lead off the sixth inning, but a strike out, fielder's choice and fly out ended the sixth with IUPUI still in front by three runs.
The Jags then put the game away for good in the seventh scoring three runs on three hits and one Omaha error. During the inning,
Maggie Good collected a RBI single, while managing to score a run of her own following two illegal pitches. Later in the inning, the Jaguars final run was scored when
Alyssa Neff crossed home plate courtesy of a wild pitch.
In the seventh, Oppenhuis continued her dominance setting down the Mavs in order to earn the victory.
Mosier, Patterson and Richards each led the way in the second game with two hits apiece.
The series finale between IUPUI and Omaha takes place on Saturday, April 26, when the teams meet to determine the series winner at 1 p.m. ET.
