Round #2 Tee Times (.pdf)KELLER, Texas - The IUPUI men's golf team shot an opening round 296 and trails only Denver (292) after 18 holes of the 2014 Summit League Championships, being played at the par-72 Sky Creek Ranch Golf Course. Senior
Rob van de Vin carded an even par 72 to lead the Jaguars on Monday (Apr. 21) and presently fourth among the 40-player field.
Fort Wayne's Jacob Groninger leads the field at 3-under 69 and Denver's Patrick Frodigh is second at 2-under 70.
"I think we had a chance to get on (Denver) today, but we're fine. We're four shots behind and neither Jose or Santi played well today," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "You don't want to let an opportunity get away, but we had a chance to catch them at the end of the round.
"Rob played really well early, which was good to see. It also gave him some confidence."
van de Vin started hot, making birdies on Nos. 12, 14 and 15 to get to 3-under after six holes. He gave a shot back on the par-3 17th, but finished his first nine with a birdie on the par-5 No. 18 to put him at 33 at the turn. The front nine weren't as friendly though as the Netherlands-native made six pars and three bogeys to finish at even par.
"I was hitting balls really good at the start of the round," van de Vin said. "On every one of the par-5's in the beginning, I was getting on the green in two and leaving myself some easy birdies. On those long putts, I was just trying to lag next to the hole and make easy twos.
"I'm pretty happy with my score today."
Both
Rylan Porter and
Derek Rohlfing carded first round 2-over 74's on Monday, although they took vastly different paths to get there. Porter was 6-over through four holes and was 7-over after eight. However, he finished his first nine with an eagle on the par-5 No. 18 and carried the momentum over to the front nine. He regained control of his round, firing off six pars and three birdies over his final nine holes to close at 2-over.
"I think Rylan's tee shot on 14 kind of turned his day around," Andrews said. "He brought (his round) back and he's got to continue to bring it back if he wants to win the tournament."
Rohlfing had three pars and a birdie on No. 13 on his first nine, before playing even on the front nine. He finished his round with seven pars and a birdie on No. 7, closing at 2-over. Both are tied for seventh overall.
Juniors
Jose Pablo Segurola and
Santiago Ruiz both shot 76 on Monday to cap the Jaguars' lineup. Ruiz made four birdies, but had a pair of double bogeys and four bogeys on an up-and-down day. Segurola never got going consistently, despite making birdies on the 15th and 18th to close his first nine.
The Jaguars will be paired with Denver and North Dakota State in Tuesday's final groupings on day two of the three-day event.
