INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Jaguars came into Saturday (Apr. 12) with a 2-1 record in Summit League play staring down Denver, the best team in the conference and favorite to win conference championship. It would be a big upset for anyone to beat Denver in conference play and the Jaguars were just the latest to come up short.
The Pioneers made quick work of IUPUI's most successful doubles team,
Jacob Bradley and
Thomas Gans, winning 8-3 at No. 2. No. 3 doubles wasn't far behind, with
Jason Jaruvang and
Akshay Verma winning four games before Denver clinched the doubles point.
Denver didn't take long to wrap up the match in singles play either. Straight-set victories in No. 2, 5, and 6 singles locked up the win 4-0.
While the Jaguars lost and their conference record fell to .500, head coach
Brandon Currie seems to have found a lineup he likes. He stuck with the same group the last four matches in singles, with Patrick O'Neill at No. 4, Verma moving up to No. 5 and
Manuel Laboy playing at No. 6 leaving Bradley to focus on doubles.
The Jaguars still have one more match this weekend. They'll play South Dakota State Sunday. A win would move the Jaguars to 3-2 in conference and a one-game lead over the Jackrabbits.
