INDIANAPOLIS – After having the visiting Phoenix of Wisconsin-Green Bay score two runs in the top of the seventh to capture Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader at the IUPUI Softball Complex, the IUPUI softball team bounced back with a 4-3 victory in Game 2 to salvage a split.
The split moved the Jags record to 12-15 on the season, while the Phoenix upped their record to 12-6.
"We had some missed opportunities there in Game 1 and that was tough to swallow, but I was proud of the way we continued to fight in Game 2," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "
Nikki Thomas was solid for us in the circle and we had some kids like
Lauren Cooper really step up for us and help us get the win in Game 2."
On the day,
Ali Mosier,
Morgan Schlobohm and
Roni Patterson each tallied two RBI, but it was Patterson's two-out, two-run homer in the bottom of the first in Game 1 that got IUPUI out to an early 2-0 lead.
That lead was short-lived as UWGB responded with three runs in their second at-bat to climb in front, 3-2, but IUPUI retaliated in its half of the second.
Maggie Good doubled to left field to start IUPUI's second at-bat and following a
Jessica Lam single, Good was able to score on a passed ball to tie the score at three. With runners at second and third and two out, Schlobohm delivered a slap single through the right side to score Lam catapulting the Jaguars back in front, 4-3.
The see-saw affair continued as Green Bay scored a run in the fourth to even the score at four, but IUPUI received a RBI double from Mosier in the bottom of the fourth to push IUPUI back in front, 5-4.
However, the Phoenix continued to fight back and a Stacey Butts solo homer in the fifth evened things back up at five.
A scoreless sixth ensued, but a two-out, two-run homer from Shannon Butts in the top of the seventh gave Green Bay a 7-5 lead and put it three outs away from victory. In the IUPUI seventh, it needed to just get one runner on to bring the tying run to the plate, but it went down in order securing the two-run win for the Phoenix.
UWGB continued that momentum into Game 2 as it picked up solo homers in the first and third innings off Thomas to jump in front, 2-0.
Despite giving up the two solo homers, Thomas was effective in the circle striking out four through the first three frames to keep the Jags within striking distance. In the bottom of the third, her offense rewarded her when Schlobohm delivered a RBI double that scored two runs - thanks in part to a Phoenix throwing error – to knot the score at two.
Thomas recorded two more punch outs in the fourth to keep the Phoenix off the scoreboard, and IUPUI went in front for the first time when
Sarah Lawrence singled just past the outstretched glove of the first baseman allowing
Alyssa Matson to score from second.
Green Bay scored once in the top of the fifth to even the score at three, but IUPUI used a pair of extra base hits to regain that advantage in its half of the fifth. With one out,
Lauren Cooper drilled the first pitch of her at-bat over the center fielder's head for a double. Cooper came in for Dillon as a defensive replacement in the fourth, and after quickly making her presence felt offensively, she scored on a Mosier double down the left field line to put the Jags back on top 4-3.
Cassie Vodde came in and replaced Thomas in the sixth and proceeded to set down the Phoenix in order allowing the Jags to maintain a lead going into the seventh.
Following a scoreless IUPUI sixth, Vodde gave up a pair of one-out singles in the seventh to put runners on first and second for Green Bay. Despite the trouble, Vodde forced the Phoenix into consecutive fielder's choices to finish off the 4-3 win for IUPUI and pick up her second save of the season.
The Jaguars are back in action on Friday, April 4, when they head to Brookings, S.D., to face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. Friday's action is set to begin at 4 p.m. ET.
