DAYTON, Ohio – Coming off a dramatic come-from-behind win on Sunday in the final game of its series against Western Illinois, the IUPUI softball team built upon that momentum with a doubleheader sweep of Dayton Wednesday afternoon at the UD Softball Complex.
In the opener,
Lindsey Richards drove in three runs to lead the Jags to a 5-3 victory, while IUPUI rallied from a 4-1 deficit in Game 2 to eventually come away with a 7-4 victory. In the circle,
Cassie Vodde and
Emili Escamilla each went the distance to pick up the wins and inch the Jags within one game of .500 at 11-12 overall.
"I thought we came out and played with great energy and intensity today. It was a total team effort and we found a way to score runs," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "Emili and Cassie had great command in the circle. These are two big wins for us and it's great to have some momentum going into our big series at home this weekend."
The Jags now take a three-game winning streak into this weekend's Summit League series against North Dakota State by capturing both games against Dayton on Wednesday, but it wasn't easy for the Jags as they needed to rally in Game 2 after a slow start.
However, IUPUI got off a great start in the opener taking an early lead in the second.
Taylor Chitwood led off the inning with a double before crossing home two batters later on a home run off the bat of Richards, her third of the season.
Dayton managed to knot the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, but after Vodde escaped some trouble, her offense gave her that two-run cushion back in the top of the fourth. Chitwood again led the charge by reaching base on a one-out single, but she was pinch-run for by
Alyssa Matson. Matson moved up a base on a
Roni Patterson walk and both runners proceeded to moved up a base on a wild pitch, which proved to be pivotal. Because of the wild pitch, Patterson moved up to third and Matson scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of
Eryn Dillon, before a RBI ground out from Richards plated Patterson boosting the Jags lead to 4-2.
The Jaguars got an insurance run in the form of a
Sarah Lawrence solo homer in the fifth to up their lead to 5-2, and the three-run differential held heading to the bottom of the seventh.
In Dayton's final at-bat, two IUPUI errors helped the Flyers score a run and put the winning run at the plate with two outs, but Vodde forced a ground out to the shortstop to end the game and give IUPUI the 5-3 victory.
With IUPUI holding on to all the momentum, it quickly shifted Dayton's way in Game 2. With the score tied at 1-1 heading to the bottom of the second, the Flyers scored three times in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 cushion.
The Jags chipped away at their deficit and scored a run in the third, fourth and sixth innings to even the score at four, but the Jags had a runner thrown out at home late in the inning to keep the score tied through five and a half innings.
Escamilla escaped a jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep the score knotted at four, and IUPUI capitalized in the seventh. Lawrence put the Jags in a great spot with a lead-off double before advancing to third on an error by the first baseman that also allowed Chitwood to reach first base.
Maggie Good came in to pinch run for Chitwood and quickly stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position, and that move paid off as
Angela Bartucci delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single to right field giving the Jaguars a 6-4 lead. After a wild pitch moved Bartucci to second, Patterson gave IUPUI an insurance run with a RBI single that scored Bartucci to up the lead to 7-4.
With Escamilla holding on to a three-run lead, she forced three ground outs in the Dayton seventh to give the Jags the 7-4 victory.
IUPUI returns to action on Friday, March 28, when it hosts a doubleheader against North Dakota State at the IUPUI Softball Complex beginning at 3 p.m.
