INDIANAPOLIS -
Ali Mosier and
Angela Bartucci drove in four runs apiece and helped lead a 10-run rally as the host Jaguars went from the brink of a sweep to 14-13 victors over Western Illinois in Summit League play at the Softball Complex on Sunday (Mar. 23). IUPUI (9-13, 1-2 Summit) trailed 6-0 before its first at-bat and later trailed 12-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Rather than going away silently, the Jaguars dialed up some thunder as all nine starters scored at least one run and eight of the nine starters had a hit. The win helped the Jaguars avoid a three-game sweep after back-to-back losses to WIU on Saturday.
"When we hit like that, we can be scary," IUPUI Head Coach
Amanda Rivera said. "We got the bats going today. We never gave up on (the game), even when we got down."
WIU's Sammy Marshall tried to finish off the Jaguars with a solo homer in the top of the fifth, giving the Leathernecks an eight-run lead. However, the Jaguars immediately went to work against the WIU (15-10, 2-1) pitching staff.
Mosier led off with a solid single to center and
Sarah Lawrence followed with a double to left-center. Bartucci kept the game alive with a sacrifice fly to right, but the Jaguars were far from done.
Taylor Chitwood flared a single to right and freshman
Roni Patterson rocketed a double to right to put two runners in scoring position.
Eryn Dillon took advantage with an infield single and Patterson wheeled around from second on an errant throw to first.
After
Lindsey Richards walked,
Morgan Schlobohm blooped a single to right-center to load the bases and recycle the lineup.
Alyssa Neff fought off a number of pitches before grounding out to second and pushing home another run. Mosier then came up with her second hit of the inning, drilling a sharp ground ball off the first base bag, allowing a pair of runs to score. The inning continued when Lawrence reached on a fielding error and Bartucci cashed in with a go-ahead two-run double to right.
After a pitching change, Chitwood added an insurance run by doubling to left, plating Bartucci.
WIU threatened in the sixth, but
Emili Escamilla wiggled out of trouble to maintain the two-run lead. The Leathernecks opened the seventh inning with a Holly Hoelting double off the left field fence, who was immediately lifted for a pinch-runner. The pinch-runner moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Marshall drilled an RBI single through the right side. However, starter
Cassie Vodde was brought on in relief and got a lineout and ground out to end it.
Vodde started the game, but allowed hits to four of the game's first five hitters before being lifted in favor of
Jocelyn Oppenhuis. Oppenhuis was greeted with a single and three-run homer as WIU built a quick 6-0 lead.
IUPUI immediately began chipping away as Mosier blasted a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning. In the third, IUPUI cut the lead back to 6-4 on a Bartucci sac fly and Patterson's RBI single to center.
Western all but buried the Jaguars in the fourth inning with a two-run double and a three-run homer off the bat of Tierney Bottino.
The Jaguars' 14 runs were the second-highest total of the season and it was IUPUI's third double-digit scoring game of the year. Mosier was 3-for-3 with four runs scored and four RBI while Chitwood went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Patterson and Schlobohm both had a pair of hits and Lawrence scored twice.
Marshall wreaked havoc from the top of the WIU order, going 4-for-4 with three runs and two stolen bases.
Escamilla (2-1) collected the win, working 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowing two runs and fanning two. Vodde came back from her rough start to earn her first save of the season while Hailey Bickford (4-5) took the loss. Bickford, who collected a win and a save on Saturday, was ineffective on Sunday. The righty gave up 10 runs (seven earned) in two innings, walking one and striking out two.
IUPUI will return to action on Wednesday, Mar. 26 when the Jaguars play a road doubleheader at the University of Dayton. The two games were a recent addition to the schedule after a rash of cancellations due to inclement weather.
