ROSEMONT, Ill. –
Alyssa Neff went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs, and
Cassie Vodde pitched 5.2 innings of relief giving up just one hit helping the Jaguars finish the Total Control Sports Invitational with a 5-2 win over tournament co-host Loyola-Chicago Sunday afternoon.
The win snapped IUPUI's early three-game skid and upped its record to 2-3 through the opening weekend.
Offensively, the Jags outhit the Ramblers six to five thanks in part to Neff and
Angela Bartucci each posting two hits. Bartucci and
Lindsey Richards accounted for the other two RBI.
"I am thrilled with our overall team effort in the win today. We came out strong and played hard every single pitch," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "Cassie came in and really shut their batters down and our defense was solid behind her. I am pleased with how we played this weekend and we are ready to get back to work this week in practice."
Both starting pitchers managed to get out of the first inning without giving up a run, but the Jags were the first to put some pressure on the opposition in the second.
Three straight walks to
Ali Mosier, Bartucci and
Maggie Good loaded the bases with nobody out in the second, but two fielder's choices eliminated back-to-back runners at home leaving the bases loaded with two outs. For IUPUI, the third at-bat with the bases loaded was the charm as
Alyssa Neff brought home two with an RBI single to give IUPUI the 2-0 lead.
That two-run cushion quickly evaporated in the bottom half of the second when Loyola picked up two runs on a RBI single, but IUPUI managed to bounce back in the fourth.
With two outs and Bartucci on first,
Lindsey Richards was walked and
Taylor Chitwood was hit by a pitch to load the bases with two outs. Again, Neff delivered with two outs blasting a single to right field to give IUPUI a one-run cushion, 3-2.
Following a scoreless bottom of the fourth, IUPUI struck again in the fifth thanks to a Bartucci RBI single and a Richards sacrifice fly, providing the Jags with a three-run cushion.
That proved to be enough for Vodde, who came in for
Emili Escamilla in the second, as she didn't let a runner past first in the fifth, sixth or seventh to secure the 5-2 victory.
The Jags return to action Feb. 15-16, when they travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to take on Austin Peay in a three-game series. The Jaguars and the Governors will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 15, before closing out the series on Sunday, Feb. 16.
