INDIANAPOLIS – Following a series victory over Austin Peay last weekend, the IUPUI softball team returns to tournament action this weekend when it travels to Louisville, Ky., for the Cardinal Classic.
IUPUI opens the tournament against Northern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, before taking on tournament host Louisville at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Feb. 22, the Jags take on Central Michigan and Eastern Kentucky at 10 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
"After a slow start last weekend, I thought we played the last two games like we are capable of," head coach Amanda Rivera said. "We have another stiff test this weekend against some quality opponents and we are going to need to continue to build upon what we've done the first two weeks if we are going to come away with some more wins this weekend."
After dropping the opener of a three-game set to the Governors in Clarksville, Tenn., last weekend, the Jags offense and defense woke up at the right time leading the team to a pair of victories.
In the circle,
Jocelyn Oppenhuis went 2-0 last weekend going the distance in both games. She started by giving up just one hit in seven innings while striking out a career-high 11 batters as the Jaguars won 5-1, before throwing another one-hit gem in a 10-1, five-inning victory in the finale.
In the batter's box,
Ali Mosier posted a .500 average last weekend going 4-for-8, including a double, and she drove in two runs. Maggie Good and
Lindsey Richards each registered home runs for IUPUI with Good driving in a team-best four runs over the three games.
Central Michigan enters the weekend with the best record among the tournament participants at 5-4. Louisville and Eastern Kentucky boast 4-5 marks, while Northern Kentucky is 1-4.
The Chippewas boast the top hitter of the tournament through roughly 10 games in Trista Cox, who is hitting .462 with five homers in 11 RBI through the first two weekends.
