CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – For the second straight game,
Jocelyn Oppenhuis gave up just one run on one hit and the IUPUI offense broke out with 10 runs on 11 hits to take the series finale against Austin Peay, 10-1, in five innings.
Less than 24 hours after throwing a complete game and striking out a career-high 11 batters, Oppenhuis was back in the circle and went all five innings and fanned three more Governors hitters to pick up her second win of the season.
Offensively, the Jaguars three through eight hitters went a combined 9-for-16 with eight RBI, and six of those nine hits went for extra bases.
"Jocelyn had another great outing again today and gave us exactly what we needed in order to win this series," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "Offensively, we had a good approach at the plate and even our outs were hard-hit balls. We raised the standard of how good we can be and if we continue to believe in our preparation, our work will pay off."
Following two straight ground outs to start the game, it appeared as if the Jags would head to the bottom of the inning without a run. However,
Sarah Lawrence started a two-out rally with a double to right-center field, before scoring during the next at-bat on a double down the left field line from
Roni Patterson. A third straight hit ensued, this time off the bat of
Ali Mosier, and that allowed Patterson to score from second placing IUPUI on top, 2-0.
After Oppenhuis relinquished a lead-off walk in the Austin Peay first, she retired six straight batters to keep the two-run lead heading into the third. In the top of the third, the Jags scored four runs on only two hits to expand the cushion to six runs. With one out in the frame,
Morgan Schlobohm reached base by drawing a walk and then moved to second on an infield single from Lawrence. A hard-hit line out off the bat of Patterson was the second out, but Mosier kept the inning alive and loaded the bases when she drew a two-out walk.
The first run of the third came home when
Maggie Good walked to score Schlobohm, and a bases-clearing double from
Angela Bartucci during the next at-bat upped the cushion to 6-0.
The Governors got one run back in the bottom of the third, but a scoreless fourth inning kept the score at 6-1 entering the fifth.
In the fifth, back-to-back doubles from Patterson and Mosier to start the inning scored Patterson and extended the Jags lead back to six, 7-1. Two batters later, Bartucci singled and Mosier scored on a throwing error from the second baseman to inch the lead up to 8-1. Then,
Lindsey Richards put the game out of reach with a two-run homer to boost the advantage to 10-1.
Oppenhuis then retired the side in the bottom of the fifth to secure the nine-run, run-rule victory.
The Jags return to action next weekend when they take on four teams at the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. On Day 1, IUPUI will square off against Northern Kentucky and tournament-host Louisville, before finishing the tournament against Central Michigan and Eastern Kentucky on Sunday, Feb. 23.
