CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After falling in the opener of a three-game set against Austin Peay, the IUPUI softball team received a stellar performance in the circle from
Jocelyn Oppenhuis to earn a doubleheader split on Saturday at Cheryl Holt Field.
The split moved IUPUI's record to 3-4 on the young season, while Austin Peay upped its record to 2-5.
"We didn't come out with the intensity we needed in the opener, but Jocelyn came through with a great performance in the second game to lead us to a win," head coach
Amanda Rivera said. "We've always known that she has the ability to pitch like she did today, and if she is able to do that consistently we are going to win a lot of games."
IUPUI opened the day scoring just two runs on five hits in a 5-2 loss to the Governors. Austin Peay jumped in front early scoring a run in the first, but IUPUI got that run back on a
Maggie Good sacrifice fly in the top of the second.
However, two more Austin Peay runs in the bottom of the second gave it a 3-1 cushion until Good came back up in the fifth and delivered a lead-off solo home run – the first of her career – cutting the Jags deficit in half, 3-2.
Unfortunately, that would be IUPUI's final hit of the game and the Governors tacked on a run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take the opener, 5-2.
In the second game, it was all IUPUI from the start and it never looked back. With one on and two out in the first, the Jaguars took advantage of an Austin Peay throwing error that allowed one run to score as it took the early one-run lead.
A 1-2-3 inning for the Governors ensued before one more run came across home in the IUPUI second.
Angela Bartucci led off the inning with a single, before moving into scoring position on a
Megan Cory sacrifice. Two batters later,
Eryn Dillon singled to right field scoring Bartucci and doubling the Jags cushion to 2-0.
The Governors managed to score a run in the bottom of the second courtesy of three walks and a wild pitch, but the Jags got that run back in the third.
Sarah Lawrence led things off with a double and then proceeded to third on a
Roni Patterson single. After Patterson stole second, Good brought home her third run of the day scoring Lawrence on a sacrifice fly to boost the lead back to two runs, 3-1.
Despite failing to add more runs in the third, a Lawrence RBI double in the fourth added to the lead as IUPUI's cushion moved to 4-1.
Meanwhile, from the third to the fifth, Oppenhuis gave up her only hit and struck out four to keep the Jags three-run lead intact.
After IUPUI tacked on an insurance run in the sixth, Oppenhuis didn't allow a runner past first in the sixth or the seventh innings to secure the 5-1 victory.
Oppenhuis went the distance and struck out a career-high 11 batters while giving up just one hit.
IUPUI and Austin Peay play the rubber match of their three-game set on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m. ET.
