Round #1 Results
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Senior
Rob van de Vin carded an opening round 5-under 67 and sits in second-place among the 60-player field at this week's Golfweek Program Challenge, being played at the par-72, True Blue Course.
As a team, IUPUI shot a 3-under 285 and is five shots back of leader James Madison (280). Northern Iowa is second at 284 and the Jaguars are tied with Akron for third-place after Sunday's first round.
"The guys have been working hard and really been working on earning the right to be confident and proud of how they played," Assistant Coach
Colby Huffman said. "Now we need to continue to focus on the next couple days and be determined to improve. We need to keep learning and keep getting better."
van de Vin was nothing short of sensational in his first competitive round of the season, making five birdies and 13 pars in a clean round of golf. Behind him,
Jose Pablo Segurola shot a 1-under 71, including shooting 34 on his second nine with three birdies and six pars.
Sophomores
Austin Winings and
Rylan Porter shot 73 and 74, respectively, with each making three birdies during round one. Porter ran into trouble on No. 4 and made a double bogey, but closed his day with a birdie on No. 9. Junior
Santiago Ruiz capped the Jaguars' lineup at 4-over 76.
"I think if this team plays its best, rankings and that kind of stuff will take care of itself," Huffman said. "We can make the NCAA's (Tournament) and make a good run. This is a good group."
Western Carolina's J.T. Poston shot a first round 6-under 66 and leads the field while van de Vin is among a three-way tie for second-place. The Jaguars will tee off at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow and will be paired with Western Carolina and Jacksonville State.
