PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. - The IUPUI men's golf team will open the 2013-14 campaign when the Jaguars participate in the Golfweek Program Challenge at True Blue Plantation, ranked among the best courses in all of South Carolina. This year's 12-team field consists of Akron, Boston College, Campbell, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville State, James Madison, Northern Iowa, Old Dominion, Stetson, Valparaiso and Western Carolina. Jacksonville State finished last season among the nation's top 100 according to the final Golfstat rankings.
Coming off a rebuilding season, the Jaguars have high hopes for this year thanks to the return of
Jose Pablo Segurola from a redshirt season and the return of nine letterwinners.
Senior
Rob van de Vin and junior
Santiago Ruiz headline the group of returners. van de Vin had a team-best 75.55 stroke average a year ago and was a First Team All-Summit Leaguer two years ago. Ruiz had a 76.63 stroke average a year ago, including winning the Beu/Mussatto Invitational in Macomb, Ill., during the spring.
Segurola was an integral part of the Jaguars' 2012 Summit League championship squad, finishing the season with a 75.21 stroke average in 38 rounds.
IUPUI's other two entries in this weekend's event are sophomores
Austin Winings and
Rylan Porter. Winings had a 78.04 stroke average in 28 rounds as a freshman last season, while Porter played at Huntington University a year ago. Porter, a native of Mooresville, Ind., led Huntington with a 74.78 scoring average and was the team's low man in six of eight tournaments.
The Golfweek Challenge is a 54-hole tournament, with 18 holes slated for Sept. 8-10. Porter is slated to be the first Jaguar off the tees, starting at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 8).
