LEMONT, Ill. - The IUPUI men's golf team overcame a three-shot deficit on the final day of this weekend's John Dallio Memorial at the par-72 Ruffled Feathers Golf Course, capturing the program's first tournament title since winning the 2012 Summit League Championships.

The Jaguars turned in a final round 296 to leapfrog second-place Missouri State and fend off host DePaul for the title. Missouri State (898), DePaul (903), Northern Iowa (917) and Seton Hall (921) made up the top five finishers.

"For 20 some holes, we looked like the best team in the tournament," IUPUI Head Coach John Andrews said. "We tried to make it interesting late, but all in all, we played well. From a talent standpoint, I thought we had the best team there. We still didn't play our best, but it's always nice to win a tournament.

"I'm not jumping up and down (about it), but this puts us in position to possibly win a couple more times this fall."

Junior Santiago Ruiz claimed his second career tournament title, finishing the event at 2-over 218 (74-73-71), which included a final round 1-under 71. He was joined in the top 10 by junior Jose Pablo Segurola, who shot 224 (71-80-73) to tie for fourth, and senior Rob van de Vin, who carded a 225 (74-77-74) to tie for eighth.

Ruiz hit a brilliant pitch on No. 17 to make par, helping the Jaguars hold steady after an otherwise rocky finish.

"His pitch on 17 was one of the best shots I've seen in 15 years of coaching. It was that good," Andrews said.

Ruiz was situated about 25 yards right of the pin and had very little green to work with, but cozied a shot up near the cup to eventually make par. van de Vin made double bogey on 17 while the three others in the lineup made bogey. Segurola finished his round going bogey-bogey-birdie-bogey-double bogey on his last five holes after going 3-under through 13.

With the tournament being decided by two strokes, Ruiz's late play may have saved the day.

"This was really important for us," Ruiz said. "It means our hard work has paid off. We can take many positives away from this tournament and carry it over during the fall."

"He's a really confident player right now," Andrews said of Ruiz. "And Jose's not far behind him. Both of those guys were chasing the kid from DePaul, seemed like all day. Santi really made a move on holes 11 through 16 and pulled away."

Junior Cole Adams shot 234 (79-76-79) and sophomore Austin Winings came in at 236 (82-76-78).

"I think we have a lot more depth than that," Andrews said. "Cole and Austin may have played their best golf during the hardest round this weekend, so their scores aren't really reflective of it. But we've got a lot of guys who can contribute."

IUPUI won the Dallio Memorial, hosted by DePaul, for the second time in the program's history. The Jaguars also won the tournament in 2010, shooting a 54-hole 890 behind Ben Engle's 2-under 214.

The Jaguars' fall slate will continue on Oct. 7-8 when they compete in the Butler Fall Invitational at Highlands Country Club in Indianapolis.
