ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - IUPUI junior Santiago Ruiz tied the Wolf Run course records with a final round 65 in the final round of this weekend's Wolf Run Intercollegiate, helping the Jaguars to a 10th place finish of 14 schools competing. As a team, IUPUI shot 916 (317-309-290) while junior Jose Pablo Segurola led the Jaguars at 10-over 223 (76-77-70).

Ruiz finished tied for 33rd overall at 227 (82-80-65).

After a frustrating first day, Ruiz opted to borrow Assistant Coach Colby Huffman's putter prior to Sunday's final round. Even though it may have taken the putter a little while to warm up, Ruiz was on fire over his final nine holes to match the course record. He opened the day with an eagle on No. 10, but later made a triple bogey on No. 15 to move back to 1-over. He finished his first nine at 36 before ripping off a 29 on the front nine to close at 65.

"If you think of all the great players that have played Wolf Run, it's incredible to think that Santi's name is there," Assistant Coach Colby Huffman said. "It's got to be a huge confidence boost for him and for our team. The guys stayed after yesterday and were the last group to leave the driving range. They're buying into the process.

"Unfortunately, struggling is part of the process. The next step is to take those bad rounds from 78 to 72 or 73. We need to play bad a little better. We'll work on minimizing our mistakes and work on recovery shots. But honestly, there's no substitute for hard work and today, hard work paid off."

IUPUI's final round 290 was the third-best of the day, trailing only first-place Illinois (281) and second-place Auburn (286).

"It's good to know when we're playing our best, we can be competitive with those schools. The potential is there. When you have four guys who have shot under par, that's a huge positive."

Illinois easily won the tournament at 844 while Auburn was second at 877. Kentucky (882), Minnesota (894) and host Indiana (896) rounded out the top five of the big name field.

Segurola fired a final round 1-under 70 on Sunday and senior Rob van de Vin closed at 228 (77-75-76). Sophomore Austin Winings turned in a 238 (82-77-79) and junior college-transfer Derek Rohlfing shot 249 (83-83-83) in his first career tournament.

The Jaguars will return to action on Sept. 28-29 when they participate in the John Dallio Memorial at Ruffled Feathers Golf Course in Lemont, Ill..
