FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IUPUI softball team opened its final weekend of the regular season on Friday at Fort Wayne and the Jags were looking to stay in the hunt for a Summit League Tournament berth, but the Jags suffered a pair of 2-1 losses to the in-state rival Mastodons.

The losses dropped IUPUI to 18-30 overall and 7-15 in the Summit League.

Game 1 – IPFW 2, IUPUI 1

In the early going, both starting pitchers were on top of their games keeping the opposing offenses off balance, but the Mastodons were able to score the first run of the game in the third.

In the third, IPFW scored one run on three hits to break the scoreless tie, but Nicole Natter kept the IPFW offense off the board in the fourth and the Jags offense rewarded their pitcher in the top of the fifth.

In the fifth, the Jags scored their first run when Aundria Basquez scored on a Morgan Schlobohm RBI triple to knot the score at one.

Cassie Vodde came in to relieve Natter in the fifth and pitched well giving up just one hit over two innings, but that one hit was a solo home run in the sixth that put the Mastodons back on top, 2-1.

In the seventh, Alicia Brewer was hit by a pitch to start a late rally, and eventually moved to third following a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the Jags failed to bring home Brewer as a pair of strikeouts ended the threat and finished off a 2-1 IPFW win.

Game 2 – IPFW 2, IUPUI 1

In the second game, Fort Wayne managed to take an early lead just like it did in the opener, but this time it scored a run on two hits in the first inning to go in front, 1-0.

From that point on, Jocelyn Oppenhuis kept the Mastodons in check offensively giving the IUPUI offense a few opportunities to get it back in the game.

In the fifth, another Schlobohm RBI-extra base hit knotted the score at one, but a RBI-sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth put IPFW three outs away from another victory.

IUPUI put the tying run on base in the seventh when Eryn Dillon walked with two outs, but a ground out ended the game clinching the Mastodon victory.

The Jags and Mastodons finish their three-game set on Saturday, May 4, at Noon ET.
