COLUMBIA, Mo. - The IUPUI men's golf team showed improvements on what Head Coach John Andrews described as a 'long three days', shooting 608 (297-311) over two rounds on Monday (Apr. 8). Andrews' squad is 10th of 12 teams competing at this week's COG Mizzou Intercollegiate at the par-72 Club at Old Hawthorne heading into Tuesday's final round.

Host Missouri leads the field at 19-under 557 and Austin Peay is second at 3-under 573. Washington State (577), Cal Poly (582) and South Dakota State (590) round out the top five after Monday's 36 holes.

"Aside from Santi's start and the last couple holes, I was pretty pleased with the first round," Andrews said. "I thought Rob (van de Vin) was going to shoot under par and obviously, Cole (Adams) was under par in the first round."

Sophomore Cole Adams was the Jaguars' top performer on Monday, including a 2-under 70 in the first round. Adams was 3-under through 14 holes, but gave back a pair of strokes with a double bogey on the par-4 11th. However, he rebounded with a pair of pars and his fourth birdie of the round on the par-4 14th. Adams was 4-over midway through his second round, but finished strong with a pair of late birdies to come in at 75. Adams is tied for 16th among the 66-player field after day one.

"Cole's done a really good job. He shows us to the golf course just expecting to play well now," Andrews said. "That's the biggest difference between him this year and last year, he expects to play well everytime he plays."

Behind Adams, junior Rob van de Vin shot 153 (72-81) on Monday and enjoyed a hot stretch of four birdies in eight holes during his first round. The par-4, 440-yard 4th derailed his second round as he finished with a nine to go from 3-over to 8-over in his second round.

Both Santiago Ruiz and Austin Winings shot 157 for the day. Ruiz shot a first round 77, followed by an 80 in the afternoon, despite a pair of birdies. Winings went 82-75 and classmate Jay Holderman shot 160 (78-82) in just his second tournament of the spring.

"Overall, Rob hit the ball well. Santi hit some good shots and Austin played much better in the second round than he did in the first," Andrews said. "Jay did a lot of good things, but he also did a lot of bad things too.

"I still see a lot of frustrations for our young team. We've got a lot of work to do between now and this point next year. Obviously, Jose (Pablo Segurola) will help, but he can't do it by himself. We've got to continue to work and see just how good we can be by this time next year."

Missouri has a dominating 16 shot lead on its home course, led by Emilio Cuartero's first day, 7-under 137 (68-69).

"Obviously, Missouri didn't have any problems with the golf course today," Andrews said. "This golf course is really nice and it's a really good tournament. The play is fast, it's a good course against a really good field.

"It's difficult to turn down coming here because it's such a good event."

Tuesday's final round is slated to begin at 9:00 a.m. Eastern (weather permitting) and will conclude at approximately 1:30 p.m..
