FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Coming off a 6-1 win over Marian University of Wednesday, the IUPUI men’s tennis team picked up its first Summit League victory of the season on Friday with another 6-1 win over conference newcomer Omaha at the IPFW Tennis Courts in Fort Wayne, Ind.
 
The win improved the Jags to 4-15 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while Omaha dipped to 4-9 overall and 0-2 in the league.
 
Strong doubles play at all three spots jumpstarted the Jags beginning with an 8-0 win at the second spot from Deon Shafer and Patrick O'Neill. Jake Hedderig and Jason Jaruvang followed with an 8-3 win at the third position, before Jacob Bradley and Nick Volz completed the sweep with a tight 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
 
Despite the score appearing one-sided, four of the six singles matches went to three sets and three of those four matches fell the Jaguars way.
 
However, IUPUI added two points to its total in straight sets with Volz and Louis Sacks winning at the No. 2 and No. 6 slots by margins of 6-2, 7-4 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively.
 
From that point, Jaruvang overcame a first-set tiebreaker loss to rally off a pair of 6-2 wins in sets two and three to earn his sixth consecutive singles win and his eighth win in his last nine matches.
 
Similar to Jaruvang, Armaan Choudhary dropped a first-set decision, 5-7, only to post a pair of 6-1 wins in sets two and three to complete the come-from-behind victory.
 
The final IUPUI point came from Hedderig. After a solid 6-3 opening-set win, Hedderig dropped a tight second set, 7-5, only to rebound with a convincing 6-1 third-set win.
 
The Jags conclude their busy weekend on Saturday, April 6, when they look to finish off a perfect 3-0 week against DePaul at 4 p.m. in Chicago, Ill.
