INDIANAPOLIS— The IUPUI softball team dropped a conference doubleheader, 5-4 and 4-3, on Sunday, April 21, to UMKC at Franklin College.
The doubleheader was rescheduled to be played at Franklin College because of poor field conditions at IUPUI from bad weather earlier in the week.
The losses drop IUPUI to 17-25 overall and 7-13 in Summit League, while UMKC improves to 16-17 overall and 5-3 in Summit League.
UMKC 5, IUPUI 4
A sixth inning four-run rally was not enough for IUPUI to come from behind and pull out the win in the first game of its doubleheader against UMKC.
Kansas City jumped on the board first in the top of the fourth inning. Marlee Maples started off the inning with a single to third base. Emily Ott followed with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on the throw as Maples slid in safe at third base. With one out, Katie Kelley reached first base on a ground ball that shortstop
Morgan Schlobohm couldn’t handle, scoring Maples for the Kangaroos’ first run of the game. Kelley stole second base to give UMKC runners on second and third, and Jenna Rangel loaded up the bases with a bunt single. Alexandra Friloux brought in UMKC’s final run of the fourth with a sacrifice fly RBI to left field to bring in Ott and make the score 2-0.
The Kangaroos added two more runs in the fifth when Brooke Parker singled to third base, and Liz Broyles followed with her second homerun of the season over the left-centerfield fence.
In the sixth, the Jags had two outs with the bases loaded when
Nikki Thomas hit her second batter of the game in Chelsea Hartwig to make the score 5-0.
The Jags started its four-run rally in the sixth on a walk from
Alicia Brewer. Deanna Friese hit
Eryn Dillon with a pitch and walked
Lindsey Richards to load up the bases.
Angel Bartucci singled down the left field line, scoring both Brewer and Dillon and advancing Richards to second. With two outs, Schlobohm reached base on an error from Friese to once again load up the bases.
Kelsey Rupert singled in Bartucci and Richards for the Jags final two runs of the game.
Five different Jags singled in the 5-4 loss.
Nicole Natter took the loss, dropping her to 1-3 on the season. She allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Cassie Vodde tossed one inning and allowed two runs on three hits and one walk, and Thomas pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit, three walks and two hit batters and struck out one.
Deanna Friese picked up her tenth win in the circle (10-9). She allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits, five walks and struck out 14.
UMKC 4, IUPUI 3
IUPUI led 3-2 in the seventh inning of the second game of its doubleheader when UMKC rallied from behind on a two-run homerun to pull out the win 4-3.
The Kangaroos once again jumped on the board first in the top of the third. Katie Kelley started off the inning with a fly ball to left field. The ball tipped off left-fielder Bartucci’s glove, and Kelley advanced to second. With two outs, Broyles walked to give UMKC runners on first and second. Maples singled to right field and started toward second base on an error from Richards. The ball was relayed in to
Jocelyn Oppenhuis in the circle, and she attempted to catch Broyles at second base, but her throw was launched back into right field. Broyles scored on the hit, and Peterson scored on the throwing error.
After a three-error third inning, IUPUI bounced back in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring three runs. With one out, Dillon reached first after being hit by a pitch. Richards doubles to left-centerfield, scoring Dillon. Bartucci followed with a double to right field to bring in Richards and tie the game at 2-2.
In the fifth, Rupert and Schlobohm led off with consecutive singles.
Ali Mosier loaded up the bases when she reached base on an error. Rupert was forced out at home on the next play, but Dillon came up with a one-out deep fly ball to left field to score Schlobohm and take the lead 3-2.
With only three outs remaining, it seemed the Jags would earn the split on the day. Caitlin Christopher led off with a single through the left side. After retiring an out, Kelley came up to bat and knocked her fifth homerun of the season over the left centerfield fence to claim the lead 4-3.
Mosier walked in the bottom of the seventh and stole second base for her third stolen base on the day, but the Jags would not bring her in.
Oppenhuis took the loss, dropping her to 4-9 on the season. She allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits, two walks and struck out eight.
Cinda Ramos tossed the first three innings for UMKC, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and one hit batter and struck out three. Friese closed out the game and earned the win to move her to 11-9. Friese allowed no runs on no hits, one walk and struck out three.
IUPUI is back in action against UIC at the IUPUI Softball Complex on Tuesday, April 23, at 5 p.m. ET.
