AVON, Ind. - With the rescheduled Butler Spring Invitational essentially reduced to a dual between IUPUI and the crosstown Bulldogs, the Jaguars shot an opening round 320 at Prestwick Country Club on Thursday (Apr. 18) and claimed the team title when Friday's round was cancelled due to wet grounds.
The win was IUPUI's second tournament victory of the season, both of which have come during the spring.
Senior
Lauren Kuss collected her second career tournament win, shooting an even par 72 and to capture a six-shot lead over her closest competition. Kuss made 12 pars and three of IUPUI's five birdies on Thursday.
"Kuss is good," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "She's become the player I expected her to be. She flat out has the ability to hit great golf shots and she's worked very hard to become the player she is."
Behind Kuss, classmate
Jordan Woods shot 9-over 81 and sophomore
Carolyn Kupchik carded an 11-over 83. Kupchik made the tournament's only eagle on the short par-5 18th.
"Kupchik started well and made an eagle on the final hole," Andrews said. "She plays good in spurts. Length isn't an issue because she absolutely crushes (the ball). She just needs to get more consistent because she has the ability to play two or three under."
Sophomore
Kelli Witt shot 12-over 84 and
Lauren Mains carded an 88.
"Mains thought she hit it pretty well. She wasn't too unhappy with her round," Andrews said. "Same for Kelli Witt. She wasn't too unhappy with her round."
Butler's Jenna Peters finished second at 6-over 78 and Alexandra Arends was third after a first round 80.
IUPUI will move on to the postseason when the Jaguars will play in The Summit League Tournament at Sky Creek Ranch in Keller, Texas from Apr. 22-24. The 54-hole event is slated for 18 holes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
