AVON, Ind. - The IUPUI men's golf team carded an opening round 306 and finished 10 shots back of leader Green Bay as the Jaguars opened action at this week's Butler Spring Invitational at the par-72 Prestwick Country Club on Thursday (Apr. 18). Host Butler rounded out the field third at 309. The tournament was shortened to just one round due to wet grounds after a lengthy rainstorm saturated the grounds overnight.
Freshman
Tyler Davis led the Jaguars at 2-over 74, making three birdies during his opening round.
"Tyler Davis made a bunch more birdies today," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "He's upset with me because he's not going to conference, and that's okay. I want him to be upset about it. He's making his case, but it's unfortunate because we had to put names on (plane) tickets last week."
Sophomore
Santiago Ruiz, who shot 2-under 70 in his last round at Prestwick last year, carded a 4-over 76 on Thursday. Freshman
Austin Winings notched a 5-over 77, including a team-high 13 pars, and
Jordan Lenard shot 79.
"I thought Austin Winings felt really good about his game today, but not necessarily about his score," Andrews said. "That's a really good sign though, because he's not a very pleasable player. He's not one to ever be overly pleased with his game."
Sophomore
Cole Adams rounded out the Jaguars' lineup with an 86 and freshman
Joel Collins shot an 88 while playing as an individual.
"Cole started really badly and never really got going," Andrews said on Thursday night. "That being said, Cole's had a really good year for us this year and I have no reason to believe he won't come back and give us a good score tomorrow."
Green Bay's Tom Boockmeier leads the field at 1-under 71 and one of Ball State's four individual entries, James Blackwell, is second at 1-over 73. Davis is among a five-way tie for third-place.
IUPUI will vie for a spot in the NCAA Tournament when the Jaguars compete in The Summit League Tournament at Sky Creek Ranch in Keller, Texas on Apr. 22-24. The 54-hole event is slated for 18 holes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
