GLENVIEW, Ill. - The IUPUI men's golf team got a strong showing from its freshman quartet and sits fifth of 14 teams at this week's Kemper Sports Intercollegiate at the par-72 Glen Club after shooting 601 on the first 36 holes. The two-day tournament is scheduled for a final round on Tuesday (Apr. 16).

Host Northwestern leads the field at 9-under 567 and Ohio State is second at 3-under 573. Illinois State (590), DePaul (597) and the Jaguars (601) make up the leaderboard's top five. Northwestern's Jack Perry is the individual leader at 10-under 134 (67-67) and Ohio State's Boo Timko is second at 3-under 141 (71-70).

Head Coach John Andrews rolled out a lineup of junior Rob van de Vin and four freshmen this week as one of the final primers for the upcoming Summit League Tournament. Typical April in the Midwest, Monday's conditions were less than ideal. Winds gusted between 15-20 miles an hour and there was precipitation throughout.

"(The freshmen) did a good job," Andrews said. "It's a good golf course. With today's technology, it's not as hard as it was 20 years ago, but this is a really good golf course.

"I was really impressed with how the freshman worked their way around the course."

van de Vin and Tyler Davis led the Jaguars at 149 on Monday while Jordan Lenard shot 152 (78-74). van de Vin shot a final round even par 72, despite not finishing well. van de Vin was 3-under through 10 holes, but gave back a shot with a bogey on the par-4 No. 3. After rebounding to make four straight pars, van de Vin closed his round going bogey-double bogey-birdie.

"I thought I kept it together pretty well," van de Vin said. "My ball striking is getting better and I'm playing more under control. Plus, I didn't have any three putts today, which was good.

"I did a good job of giving myself some birdie opportunities and keeping the big numbers off my card."

Davis had an eventful opening round, making six birdies to go along with five bogeys and a double bogey on way to a 73. Davis finished day one in second among the field with nine birdies.

Lenard made four birdies on Monday while Jay Holderman shot 153 (79-74), which included four second round birdies. Freshman Bryce Very's 154 (77-77) was highlighted by an eagle on the 503 yard, par-5 No. 14 during his second round.

"It's days like this where I start to see light at the end of the tunnel," Andrews said. "We didn't close great in the second round. We were in the red for most of the day, but just didn't close well. I told the guys in the van, the only way to shoot in the red is to be in the red, unless you're going to birdie the last hole.

"I'm not sure I can teach them that, but it can be learned. You just need to continue to put yourself in that position."

The Jaguars will be grouped with DePaul and St. John's on Tuesday and are scheduled to start going off the first tee at 9:45 Eastern.
