INDIANAPOLS—The IUPUI softball team continues its road trip this weekend when it travels to Omaha, Neb., to take on the Omaha Mavericks.
With Omaha making the transition to Division-I and joining the Summit League in July 2012, the three-game series will be the first time the two schools meet.
IUPUI (15-19, 5-7 Summit) enters the weekend coming off a mid-week split with Indiana State. The Jaguars sit in fifth place in the Summit League standings and wins against Omaha (27-5, 5-1 Summit) could propel them ahead of the fourth ranked Mavericks.
Freshman
Alyssa Neff has added to the lineup as of late, heading the Jags in batting average at .467. Neff started to see more consistent time at the start of April, and she has gone an impressive 6-for-11 in her last five games.
Eryn Dillon (.314) and
Ali Mosier (.315) continue to be consistent contributors to the Jags lineup. Mosier also leads the lineup in RBI (27) and slugging percentage (.500). Mosier's 27 RBI rank fifth in the conference.
Neff (4-5) and Mosier (14-14) also have combined for 18-of-19 stolen bases.
Jocelyn Oppenhuis sits atop the Jags’ pitching staff. Oppenhuis has a team-low ERA of 2.96. Her most recent win came in the series finale against Oakland. Oppenhuis is 4-7 in her 18 appearances - including the staff’s only save - and leads the staff in strikeouts with 66.
Omaha boasts a .290 team batting average led by sophomore Allie Mathewson. Mathewson is hitting .378 on the season with eight doubles, six triples and nine homeruns. She also has a team-high 29 RBI and leads the team in slugging percentage (.802) and on-base percentage (.457).
Molly Negrate, Tara Trede and Campbell Ditto are the other three Mavericks players hitting above .300.
Mathewson also poses a threat on the bases. She is 9-for-10 in stolen base attempts. Senior Lindsay Redding will also threaten on the base paths stealing 10 bags in 13 attempts.
The Omaha pitching staff holds a staff 1.50 ERA compared to a 4.77 ERA from its opponents. The staff has been able to hold opposing teams to only a .210 batting average led by senior Ashton Hughes. Hughes owns a 1.31 ERA with a 7-0 record. Junior Dana Elsasser follows close behind Hughes with a 1.52 ERA and a 16-5 record. Elsasser leads the staff in strikeouts with 94 of the staff’s 148.
