INDIANAPOLIS – After taking a one-run lead in the second, Butler responded with five runs in the middle innings to defeat the IUPUI softball team, 5-1, Monday afternoon at the Butler Softball Field.
The loss dropped IUPUI’s record to 11-16 overall, while Butler improved to 11-14. The Bulldogs and Jags evened their season series after IUPUI downed Butler, 1-0, earlier this season.
The Jags managed to score just one run on two hits, while Butler took advantage of four IUPUI errors and added eight hits en route to its five runs.
Monday’s game between the two local rivals served as a make-up game after their game set for March 20 was postponed due to cold temperatures. Despite the game being played at the Butler Softball Field, IUPUI and Butler switched roles with the Jags serving as the home team.
Following a scoreless inning and a half, the Jags came to the plate in the bottom of the second and put pressure on the Bulldogs.
Eryn Dillon was hit in the arm to start the inning and moved over to second when
Jessica Lam’s sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a hit. A walk to
Megan Cory ensued to load the bases with nobody out, but a strikeout and a foul out kept the bases full with two out. The Jags were able to bring one run across on an
Angela Bartucci RBI walk, but a strikeout left the bases loaded as the Jags went into the third inning leading, 1-0.
Vodde continued to pitch well until she found herself in some trouble in the fourth. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the game in the fourth scoring three runs on four hits and one IUPUI error to catapult in front, 3-1.
Butler added to its lead in the fifth with two more runs on three hits to move its advantage to 5-1, before the Jags attempted one final rally in the seventh.
In the final frame, IUPUI used a bunt single from
Emili Escamilla and a walk to
Aundria Basquez to place runners on first and second with one out. Both runners advanced a base on a ground out to the right side, but the game concluded on ground out to the pitcher.
IUPUI returns to action on Wednesday, April 3, when it hosts Big Ten foe Purdue in a doubleheader at the IUPUI Softball Complex. Game 1 of the doubleheader is set to begin at 4 p.m., with Game 2 beginning approximately 30 minutes following the completion of Game 1.
