JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. - The IUPUI men's golf team closed its first spring tournament with a sixth-place finish at the Don Benbow Invitational, hosted by Butler at the par-71 Jacksonville Beach Golf Club on Tuesday (Mar. 12). IUPUI shot 295 on the final day to close at 597.
Florida Atlantic won the tournament by four shots, finishing at 582 and Bethune-Cookman was second at 586. Northern Kentucky (591), Evansville (592) and Cleveland State (595) rounded out the 14-team field's top five.
Sophomore
Cole Adams led the Jaguars' effort on Tuesday, carding a 2-under 69 and freshman
Austin Winings shot 2-over 73, including the first-ever hole-in-one of his lifetime.
"Cole has done a good job of transitioning from his freshman to his sophomore year," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "He looked really relaxed down from the fifth hole on. When he's relaxed, he can be a really good player.
"If you look at the history of our program, a lot of guys have played a lot better their sophomores years from their freshman years. Cole's no different."
Adams rebounded after shooting 80 on Monday and closed the tournament tied for 16th at 149 (80-69). Winings was the Jaguars' low man at 148 (75-73) and tied for 12th among the 88-player field. The freshman from Brownsburg, Ind. hit a 6-iron on the par-3 12th, highlighting his round with an ace.
"Austin's going to be a really good player," Andrews said. "His work is paying off. He worked really hard on his game during the winter and really started to take the game seriously."
Sophomore
Santiago Ruiz and freshman
Jordan Lenard both finished the tournament at 10-over 152 and junior
Rob van de Vin closed at 154 (76-78).
"I have no complaints on the guys' side aside from Rob," Andrews said. "Rob needs to win tournaments for us to be successful. I'm not saying he needs to win every tournament, but he should be in contention to win tournaments. He's that good. He's talked about winning tournaments; now he has to go out and do it."
Senior
Matt Bruce led IUPUI's four individual entries with a 156 (79-77) and
Jay Holderman shot 161 (83-78).
Bethune-Cookman's Ryan Fricker won medalist honors with a 1-under 141 and ultimately defeated Cleveland State's Andrew Bailey in a playoff.
IUPUI will continue the Spring Break trip tomorrow when the Jaguars open up play in the Butler Florida Invite. Andrews' squad will have four individuals participate and not take part in the team scoring at Windsor Parke in Jacksonville.
"We've got four guys playing, it's not a very big field and it's at a good course," Andrews said. "All four of those guys should be thinking about winning a college golf tournament."
