SOFTBALL SWEPT AT KENNESAW STATE CLASSIC

IUPUI was held to only seven hits in both games. Kelsey Rupert was the only Jag to record hits in both games, going 2-for-6 on the day.

KENNESAW, Ga. – The IUPUI softball team fell in its final two games at the Kennesaw State Classic to UAB 3-0 and Liberty 5-2.The losses drop the Jags’ record to 3-6 overall.

UAB 3, IUPUI 0

IUPUI was held to only three base runners and two hits in its loss to Alabama-Birmingham Sunday morning. 

UAB pitcher Lauren Webster recorded 14 strikeouts in the win, allowing only two hits and one walk. Webster now holds a team best 1.86 ERA. 

Nikki Thomas took the loss for the Jags, logging her first loss in the circle. She allowed only one earned run, fanned seven, walked two and hit one batter.

UAB jumped on the board in the first inning. Amy Dennis walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Caitlin Attfield singled on a bunt, moving Dennis over to third who scored on a throwing error by Jags’ third baseman Jazmine Pedrotti.

The Blazers tacked on two more runs, one in the fifth and one in the sixth. Attfield led the UAB offense going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Kelly Britt was also 2-for-2 and scored a run.

IUPUI’s hot offense was held silent for much of the game. Kelsey Rupert singled on a bunt in the sixth and Alicia Brewer hit a two-out double to left field in the top of the seventh as the Jags made one last attempt to even out the score. Brewer reached third on a passed ball, but the game ended on an Eryn Dillon flyout. 


Liberty 5 , IUPUI 2

The Jags fell to a quick 2-0 disadvantage after Jocelyn Oppenhuis gave up two homeruns to Liberty in IUPUI’s final game at the Kennesaw State Classic. 

Oppenhuis was pulled in the top of the second inning after giving up a two-out homerun in the first inning to Sammi Shivock, and a no-out homerun over the left field fence to Grace Nordan in the second. Emili Escamilla finished the remaining six innings, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits and striking out two. 

The Jags were able to answer back in the bottom of the third when Jazmine Pedrotti singled to right field to lead off the inning. Alyssa Neff came in to pinch run for Pedrotti and advanced to second as Nikki Thomas singled through the left side to give the Jags runners on first and second with no outs. Kelsey Rupert continued the Jags hot streak as she singled up the middle, scoring Neff and advancing to second base on the throw home. Thomas attempted to steal home and was thrown out, but Rupert advanced to third and later scored on a flyout by Ali Mosier to tie the game at 2-2. 

The Flames scored the only other run it would need to pull out the win in the top of the fourth. Nordan led off the inning with a single through the left side. Kelby Allen reached base on a fielder’s choice, leaving both runners safe at first and second. Megan Robinson laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both Nordan and Allen into scoring position, and Hanna Nichols singled to third base to bring in Nordan before the end of the inning. 

The Jags would not reach base again until the bottom of the seventh when Jessica Lam reached base on an error from Liberty shortstop Nordan. Lam stole second and advanced to third on an Eryn Dillon groundout.  Angela Bartucci walked and then advanced to second on wild pitch, while attempting to score on the wild pitch, Lam was thrown out at home. Pedrotti walked to give the Jags runners on first and second with two outs, but Thomas grounded out to third to end the game. 

The Jags are back in action next weekend as it travels to Nashville, Tenn., for the Tennessee State University Tiger Invitational.
