INDIANAPOLIS - Junior
Derek Rohlfing highlighted the Jaguars' efforts at this week's Butler Fall Invitational at Highland Country Club, shooting a 1-over 141 (71-70) to finish fourth among the 36-player field on Tuesday (Oct. 8).
As a team, IUPUI placed fifth of five teams with a 36-hole 591 (291-300). Bradley won the team title at 571, edging Evansville by three strokes. Host Butler leapfrogged both Eastern Illinois and IUPUI on the final day to finish third.
"I think we got really content after winning a golf tournament against a much better field," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "We really struggled to make birdies in this tournament. That's what it came down to, our inability to make birdies."
Sophomore
Austin Winings led the IUPUI lineup at 5-over 145 (72-73) to finish tied for 11th and senior
Rob van de Vin shot 6-over 146 (73-73). Junior
Jose Pablo Segurola shot 10-over 150 (74-76) and
Santiago Ruiz and last year's runner-up,
Cole Adams, both carded 151's to round out the Jaguars' lineup.
"Austin fought through it for a 73," IUPUI Head Coach
John Andrews said. "I give him credit for grinding and shooting a score. I didn't see enough of his shots to know exactly how he played, but I give him credit for grinding."
Rohlfing, one of five Jaguars playing as an individual, finished tied for the tournament lead with 27 pars for his first career top five finish. Sophomore
Rylan Porter was just off pace at 3-over 143 (70-73) and finished tied for fifth.
"Rohlfing played much better than he did in the last tournament and should gain a lot of confidence going forward," Andrews said. "I thought Rylan Porter played adequately but he can play a whole lot better."
Sophomore
Tyler Davis had a team-high seven birdies in two rounds and closed at 7-over 147 (74-73) and classmate
Bryce Very shot 9-over 149 (75-74). Sophomore
Jay Holderman capped IUPUI's individual entries at 154 (79-75).
Despite feasting on the course's par-5's, the Jaguars struggled to make birdies on both days, making just 11 among the five-man lineup. Both van de Vin and Winings made 26 pars each, with both Winings and Ruiz each carding an eagle on Tuesday (Oct. 8).
IUPUI will cap the fall schedule on Oct. 14-15 with a pair of tournaments. The Jaguars will play in the Crooked Stick Intercollegiate in Carmel, Ind., hosted by Indiana University, while also sending a team to the Dayton Fall Invitational in Kettering, Ohio. That tournament will be played at NCR North.
