INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI volleyball team used a late rally in set four to clinch a 3-1 win over Summit League newcomer Denver Saturday afternoon at The Jungle for their seventh consecutive conference win. With the wins this weekend, the Jags dropped the top two teams in the conference in the last two days and extended their Summit League home winning streak to 15 matches.
Up two sets to one but facing three set points in the fourth set, the Jaguars rallied and pulled out the victory 25-17, 25-23, 18-25, 29-27. The win moves the Jaguars (13-12) over .500 for the first time this season and pushes their conference record to 7-2. With the loss, the Denver Pioneers fall to 12-10 overall and 6-3 in conference.
Kaitlyn Hickey and
Moriah Fair led the Jags with 16 kills apiece.
Kelly Wachtel contributed 11 kills and
Alexis Meeks had 47 assists to go along with nine digs.
"Moriah and Kaitlyn just did a great job out there. They struggled for a little while - Denver's got a big block up there and they were doing a good job of stopping us - but [Moriah and Kaitlyn] started moving the ball around a little bit and finding the seams and the holes to get the kill," head coach
Steve Payne said.
The Jaguars came out strong to open the match, opening up an 8-3 lead and forcing a Pioneer timeout. The Pioneers never threatened and the Jaguars pushed their lead to 23-14 off three consecutive Fair kills, all assisted by Meeks. The Jaguars ultimately took the first set, 25-17, on the back of Fair's seven kills without an error. Collectively, IUPUI had a .500 hitting percentage and four blocks in the set.
Denver jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead after a disappointing first set, but a
Kortni Wright kill sparked a four-point run. The Jaguars eventually tied it at 16 and the set remained tight with seven more ties, but a service error by Denver's Kate Acker and a Wright kill gave the set to the Jaguars, 25-23. Wright had five kills and Hickey had five kills and 10 digs for the Jaguars in the second set.
The third set remained close early with ties at one, two and four, but the Pioneers controlled the action from that point. Hickey led the Jaguars with six kills in the set, but she also had four errors. Following her error at 21-16, Denver's Hannah Safari hit two service aces to cap a 6-0 run and give the Pioneers a 23-16 lead. An error from Fair closed out the set for the Pioneers, 25-18.
The Jaguars trailed most of the final set and were facing three set points, before winning four consecutive points to gain a match point of their own. Meeks had a kill from Howard to tie the score at 24-24 and Fair's fourth kill of the set gave the Jaguars a 25-24 lead. The Pioneers had two more leads at 26-25 and 27-26 but the Jaguars fought off both set points - five in total in the set - and took the match on an attack error from Colleen King.
Defensively,
Beth Howard posted a match-high 24 digs, while
Logan Walling recorded a career-best seven blocks.
IUPUI will travel to Omaha to take on the Mavericks this Friday (Nov. 1) and will continue their road trip when they head to Macomb, Ill. on Sunday (Nov. 3) to play the Western Illinois Leathernecks.
