10/15/2013 5:45:00 PM

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - For the last tournament of the Jaguars's fall schedule, IUPUI sent Akshay Verma, Jason Jaruvang, Thomas Gans, and Pat O'Neill to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Ohio Valley Championships. The field was extremely deep and talented, but Jaruvang advanced to the round of 32 to lead the Jags.

Jaruvang received a bye in the round of 128, but his second-round opponent, Xavier's Zach Mueck, won a straight-set contest, 6-4, 7-6 in the first round over Lipscomb's David Salazar. Mueck took an early lead over Jaruvang with a 7-6 win in the first set, but Jaruvang showed some resolve and bounced back for two decisive set wins to earn the victory, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.

Vanderbilt's Kris Yee was Jaruvang's third-round opponent. Yee also received a first-round bye, but won his second-round match over Dayton's Bernardo Sanson with ease. Jaruvang kept the match close, but couldn't get over the top and fell 7-5, 6-4.

O'Neill and Gans each struggled with their first-round opponents. O'Neill lost to Tennessee Tech's Alex Arovin 6-1, 6-1 and Gans lost to East Tennessee State's David Biosca 6-2, 6-2. Both received a first-round bye in the consolation bracket, but neither recorded a win. Gans advanced to the third round after his opponent, Kentucky's Tom Jomby, suffered an injury.

Verma also dropped his opening-round match in the main draw, falling to Tennessee Tech's Alberto Esteban 6-4, 6-2. With byes in the first two rounds of the consolation bracket, Verma faced off against Nicholas Mitric from Murray State and David Clifford from Morehead state in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, to advance to the quarterfinals.

All four played in the doubles bracket, although neither pair was able to escape the first round. Gans and Jaruvang lost their match to Purdue's Ricky Medinilla and Szymon Tatarczyk 8-4, and O'Neill and Verma fell to Louisville's Van Damrongsri and Sebastian Stief.
