ROCHESTER, Mich. – The IUPUI men’s swimming and diving team traveled to Summit League foe Oakland on Friday afternoon and posted three victories in a 181-131 loss to the Golden Grizzlies at the OU Aquatics Center.

Despite the loss, the Jags were able to put together some good swims in a setting that will serve as the site for the upcoming 2013 Summit League Championships Feb. 20-23.

“We swam really well in a lot of spots,” said head coach Matt Bos. “We actually need to get some rest in the coming weeks so we can sharpen up and prepare to come back here and put together a strong championship meet.”

Rich Sunkel and Daniel Saunders got the Jags off to a strong start in the 1000 freestyle placing second and third with the fifth- and sixth-best times, respectively, in school history. Sunkel swam the 40 lengths in 9:57.91, while Saunders timed in at 9:58.76.

Tony Carroll followed Sunkel with a second-place showing in the 200 free with the third-best time in school history at 1:42.44.
After a few events without a podium, Adam Ferguson came through with a third-place time of 22.00 in the 50 free, before Mitchell Gauger took top honors in the 1-meter dive at 280.35.

In the 100 free, Carroll notched his second runner-up finish of the day with a time of 46.90, but in the next event, Ferguson was able to join Gauger as an individual-event winner. Ferguson and Alexander Rhoda went 1-2 in the 100 breast with marks of 59.13 and 1:00.36, respectively, with Ferguson’s time registering as the sixth-best time in the IUPUI record books.

Towards the end of the meet, Sunkel and Saunders went 2-3 in the 500 free, CJ Howard and John Kamphuis went 2-3 in the 50 fly, Gauger and Alex Olson went 2-3 in the 3-meter dive and Rhoda and Jose Serra finished 2-3 in the 200 IM for the Jags.

To close out the meet, the Jags quartet of Ferguson, Mason Hamilton, Carroll and Howard claimed the victory in the 200 freestyle relay.

The Jags return to Indiana and are back in action on Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Butler Invite at Fishers High School. The meet is set to begin at Noon.
