BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The IUPUI women’s tennis team continued its fall season this past weekend at a rain-shortened BGSU Invitational and interim head coach Pat Nickell witnessed continued improvement from his team from last week to this week.

“It was a much stronger level of tennis at Bowling Green this weekend and the team raised their level to meet that competition. They continue to work and play hard and were able to get some good wins as a result,” Nickell said. “Shelby Hullett, Vanessa Whyte and Abbey Neff all had good singles wins against MAC opponents.”

In singles play, Whyte and Hullett each claimed first-round victories in Flights 3 and 4, respectively, proving to be IUPUI’s only wins in the opening round.

Looking to advance to the championship matches in their flights, Whyte and Hullett each came up short in their semifinals matches in straight sets.

In other singles play, Abbey Neff bounced back from an opening-match loss with a 6-4, 6-3 win to move on, but her next match was cancelled due to weather.

Bobbi Modesto, Rachael Bridegroom and Jesika Bays also played in singles in Flights 1, 6 and 7, respectively, but each went 0-2.

In doubles play, all three IUPUI teams lost their opening matches and combined to finish 0-4, but Nickell still saw improvement in his doubles teams.

“Our doubles was much improved and we continue to push them on not only how they prepare match to match, but how to compete match to match. They continue to embrace the change and I look forward to even better results this weekend at Wright State,” Nickell added.

The Jaguars return to the court this weekend when they travel to Fairborn, Ohio, to compete at the Wright State Invitational. The tournament begins on Friday, Sept. 28 and concludes on Saturday, Sept. 29.
