CHICAGO - The IUPUI women's golf team shot a second round 320 and finished tied for second-place at the 15-team CSU Cougar Classic, being held this week at the par-72 Harborside International. Indiana State won the event at 631 (315-316) while the Jaguars finished tied with Valparaiso for second at 635.
Senior
Jordan Woods closed tied for second at 151 (73-78) and classmate
Lauren Kuss also earned a top 10 finish at 156 (73-83).
Tuesday's play began ominously for the Jaguars as senior
Jordan Essman's Monday round was disqualified in the morning for an incorrect drop during round one. The DQ was a six-shot swing for the Jaguars as Essman's opening round 81 was replaced by redshirt freshman
Maria Krempp's 87.
Given the early adversity, the Jaguars never really recovered as the wind gave the field fits on Tuesday. Sophomore
Yuri Otsuka was IUPUI's low score at 76 in round number two.
"We've got to work on playing a little bit better in the wind. We didn't play logical wind golf," head coach
John Andrews said. "They're very, very talented. There's no doubt about that. We've got to learn to use the wind to our advantage, as opposed to always making it a disadvantage.
"Every mistake I saw today was on the wind side of the ball."
The one player seemingly unfazed by the wind was Valpo's Kelly Voigt as she earned medalist honors at an even par 144 (75-69).
Otsuka finished the tournament with four birdies as the Jaguars led the field with 20 total birdies.
"Yuri played well," Andrews said. "She's a good player and she's getting even better with experience."
Woods carded a final round 78 and both Kuss and Essman shot 83 on Tuesday to account for the 320. Kuss finished tied for the tournament lead with eight birdies, five of which came on Monday. Krempp finished with an 85 to end the event at 172.
IUPUI's lone individual,
Carolyn Kupchik, registered a career-low 77 and tied for 14th at 158 (81-77).
"If Kupchik can shoot 77 today with the wind on that golf course, then she's a really good player," Andrews said. "She played really well. She just needs to play better in qualifying because she can help our lineup."
Kupchik was one of only three players in the field to make an eagle on the 429-yard, par-5 No. 9 on Tuesday.
"Today was a good learning experience," Andrews said. "This is a really good golf course and the wind was blowing, so hopefully we learned from that."
IUPUI will return to action on Sept. 22-23 when the Jaguars participate in the Cardinal Classic at the Players Club in Muncie, Ind.. Andrews squad only sent individual players to the event a year ago and was led by Otsuka's 160 (79-81).
