INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI softball team looked to build upon its mid-week doubleheader sweep at Eastern Illinois when it opened its Summit League series with a doubleheader on Saturday against IPFW, but the Mastodons proved to be too much as it swept the Jags by scores on 7-1 and 9-4 on a rain-soaked evening in Indianapolis.

The losses dropped IUPUI’s overall record to 17-32 and its conference record to 6-14, while IPFW upped its overall record to 39-11 and its conference mark to 14-6.

Game 1 – IPFW 7, IUPUI 1

In the opener, IPFW’s Ashleigh Bousquet put her stamp on the game and carried the Mastodons to the win.

Bousquet started the contest with a RBI single in the first to put IPFW in front, 1-0, before drilling a two-run homer to center field in the third to up the Mastodons lead to 3-0.

Meanwhile, IPFW starter Miranda Kramer put down the Jags first nine batters in order through three innings until Nicole Checkie reached base when she was hit by a pitch to lead off the fourth inning.

Following Checkie’s hit by pitch, Kelsey Rupert laid down a perfect bunt single that put runners on first and second with nobody out. Following a fly out that moved both runners up a base, the Jaguars had two chances to get on the board, but a strike out preceded a pop out ending the threat.

Just as IUPUI squandered a scoring opportunity, Bousquet made the Jags pay in the fifth belting another two-run homer to center field as the Mastodons lead grew to 5-0.

The Jaguars got on the board in the fifth when a IPFW fielding error allowed a run to score, but just as IUPUI pulled within four,
Bousquet again delivered a two-run home run, this time to right-center field, pushing the IPFW cushion to 7-1.

In the IUPUI seventh, the Jags went down in order and IPFW claimed the opener, 7-1.

Game 2 – IPFW 9, IUPUI 4

Following a scoreless first inning in the second game of the doubleheader, the Jags were able to take the early lead in the second inning thanks to an Eryn Dillon solo home run, her second of the season.

Unfortunately for IUPUI, the Mastodons responded with two runs in the top of the third to claim a 2-1 lead, and following a scoreless Jags third inning, IPFW scored five more runs on three hits in the fourth to open up a 7-1 advantage.

The Jags did their best to climb back into the game as Leah Prewitt cut IUPUI’s deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run homer down the left field line, but a two-spot in the following half inning from IPFW moved the lead back to 9-4, and it stayed that way all the way to the end as the Mastodons claimed the doubleheader sweep with a five-run win in Game 2.

The teams conclude their three-game set on Sunday, April 29, at Noon at the IUPUI Softball Field, and prior to the start of the game, the Jaguars will honor its two seniors, Prewitt and Samantha Bumbaugh, who will suit up in an IUPUI uniform for the final time in front of the home crowd.
