Game 2 (Originally postponed from Friday) – IUPUI 10, Oakland 2 | Box Score (.pdf) | Box Score
Game 2 of Friday’s doubleheader was postponed in the bottom of the first inning and resumed from that spot on Saturday.
When the game was postponed, Oakland had a runner on second with just one out, but when play picked back up,
Nikki Thomas managed to get out of the inning without giving up a run keeping the score knotted at zero.
The Jags managed to get Thomas a lead in the second as a fielding error on a ball off the bat of
Leah Prewitt allowed
Jenny Royse to score, and a double steal two batters later resulted in Prewitt crossing home plate as IUPUI climbed in front, 2-0.
Oakland scored two runs of its own in the third to tie the score at two, but the Jags took control in their next at-bat and would not look back.
Royse led off the fourth with a triple to right field and
Lindsey Richards came up next and reached on a fielder’s choice. With a pair of runners on, Prewitt smashed a double to right-center field scoring both runners as the Jags regained a two-run lead, 4-2.
Following a sacrifice bunt, Thomas helped her own cause with a RBI single, before scoring on the Jags second triple of the game, this time from
Nicole Checkie.
Kelsey Rupert continued the string of hits with a single that scored Checkie, upping the Jags lead to 7-2, and the remaining runs came on a RBI single from Royse and a two-RBI single from Richards as the Jags lead expanded to eight, 10-2.
Thomas managed to keep the eight-run lead in tact through the fifth inning, resulting in the Jags claiming the 10-2 win in just five innings.
Royse led IUPUI offensively going a perfect 3-for-3, while Richards and Prewitt each drove in a pair of runs.
In the circle, Thomas went five innings giving up five hits and two earned runs, while striking out six to earn the victory.
Series Finale – Oakland 3, IUPUI 1 | Box Score (.pdf) | Box Score
In the finale, Oakland got out to an early lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first, but the Jags quickly responded in their next at-bat.
Royse continued her hot hitting registering a one-out single to get the second inning started, and then moved to second on a ground out to first. With two outs and Royse on second, a wild pitch moved Royse to third and Richards brought her home with a RBI single tying the game at 1-1.
Unfortunately for IUPUI, its offensive production slowed down as it registered just one hit the rest of the way, a double from Seering in the sixth.
Meanwhile, the Golden Grizzlies scored a run in the third and the fifth to bump its lead to two runs, 3-1.
In the seventh with the Jags trailing by two, Prewitt got on base with a lead-off walk bringing the tying run to the plate three times, but the Jags could not get a rally going as it fell by that 3-1 margin.
The Jaguars are back in action on Tuesday, April 24, when they head to Charleston, Ill., to take on Eastern Illinois in a doubleheader. First pitch for the opener is set for 5 p.m. ET.
