INDIANAPOLIS – Following its weekend split against UIC, the IUPUI softball team continues its road swing when it heads north to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue on Tuesday, April 3, at 4 p.m.
The Jaguars enter the week with a 10-22 overall record, while the Boilermakers are off to 22-9 start, including a school-record 5-0 start in Big Ten play.
Part of Purdue’s success lies in in its offense considering six of its nine starters are hitting over .300 led by Lindsey Rains’.398 average. Collectively, more than a quarter of the Boilermakers hits this season have gone for extra bases and they also are a threat to steal converting 72-of-87 attempts.
In the circle, Lexy Moore anchors the pitching staff owning a 15-2 record and a 2.41 ERA. Collectively, the Boilermakers pitching staff yields 3.85 earned runs per outing.
The Jaguars pitching staff will be presented with the task of neutralizing the Boilermakers offense and four of IUPUI’s hurlers combined to give up just six hits and two runs in a doubleheader against the Flames last weekend.
Nikki Thomas got the start in the opener against UIC and gave up just one hit, before
Jocelyn Oppenhuis,
Emili Escamilla and
Samantha Bumbaugh combined to hold the Flames scoreless in a 1-0 victory.
Offensively,
Nicole Checkie has been IUPUI’s top hitter in its last seven games posting a .435 average (10-for-23) in addition to scoring five runs and swiping four bases. Checkie helped the Jags to a 1-0 victory against the Flames in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader by hitting a solo home run in the top of the seventh, the first home run of her career, which ultimately proved to be the difference.
