INDIANAPOLIS – After falling by a run in the opener of a doubleheader Tuesday against Dayton, the IUPUI softball team exploded for 10 runs in Game 2 as it defeated the Flyers to salvage a split at the IUPUI Softball Complex.
The 10 runs scored in the second game of the doubleheader marked the second time this season that IUPUI had scored 10 or more runs in a game, with the first occurrence taking place on Feb. 10 against Louisiana-Monroe.
Game 1 – Dayton 2, IUPUI 1 | Box Score (.pdf)
Both teams went scoreless for the first four innings before the Flyers put a run on the board in the fifth.
UD had its lead-off runner reach on a lead-off walk and the Flyers played small ball using a sacrifice bunt to move the runner on first to second. A misplayed ground ball during the next at-bat put runners on the corners with one out, and Dayton proceeded to put down a perfect safety squeeze to plate its first run and jump in front, 1-0.
UD tacked on another run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to double its lead to 2-0, before IUPUI got on the board in its half of the sixth.
Walks to Jenny Royse and Nicole Checkie were sandwiched around a strike out putting runners on first and second with one out. With #
Kelsey Rupert# at the plate, a wild pitch moved both Royse and Checkie up a base, and another wild pitch got far enough away from the plate to allow Royse to score and Checkie to move to third. Unfortunately for the Jags, a pop out and a deep fly out ended the inning as the Flyers stayed in front, 2-1.
After
Samantha Bumbaugh retired UD in order in the seventh, Megan Cory walked with two outs to put the tying run on base, but a strike out during the next at-bat closed out the 2-1 Dayton win.
Dayton put together just two hits, but the Jags only base knock came from Cory in the second inning.
Game 2 – IUPUI 10, Dayton 5 | Box Score (.pdf)
The Jags got off to a great start in Game 2 as Checkie started the bottom of the first with a double, and then found her way to third on an errant relay throw from the center fielder. Two batters later, a single through the right side from Ashley Seering scored Checkie to give the Jags an early one-run lead.
However, Dayton looked to bounce back in the second as their patient hitting resulted in three walks to load the bases with nobody out. After IUPUI erased the runner from third at home on a ground ball, the Flyers were able to use a RBI single and a RBI fielder's choice to take its first lead of the game, 2-1.
It didn't take long for IUPUI to seize control as
Lindsey Richards drilled her first home run of the season after a Royse single in the bottom of the second to catapult IUPUI back in front, 3-2.
The see-saw battle ensued in the top of the third when Lauren Nacke put Dayton back on top with a two-run homer of her own.
In the bottom of the third, IUPUI blew things open scoring six runs while sending 10 batters to the plate as its lead escalated to 9-4. In the frame, Aundria Basquez brought home a run with a RBI walk,
Jessica Lam picked up a RBI on a ground out, and Royse and Checkie each registered two-RBI base knocks.
After the Flyers scored a run in the fifth to close their deficit to four, the Jags got that run back in the sixth. With Seering on second following a double down the left field line,
Lauren Cooper drove her home on a soft single up the middle moving the lead back to five, 10-5.
In the seventh, Bumbaugh had no problem taking care of the Flyers setting them down in order to close out the five-run win.
Offensively, Checkie and Seering each went 3-for-4 with Checkie driving in two runs and Seering knocking in one. Royse and Richards also posted multi-hit games and each drove in a pair of runs.
Thomas earned the win, her sixth of the season, while Bumbaugh put together a stellar three innings of relief yielding just one hit and striking out two.
IUPUI returns to Summit League play this weekend when it travels to Oakland for a three-game set beginning on Friday, April 20, with a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.Â
