KANSAS CITY – UMKC scored two runs in the first inning and that proved to be enough as the Kangaroos defeated the IUPUI softball team 2-0 in the finale of their three-game set Sunday in Kansas City.
The loss dropped the Jags record to 13-27 overall and 5-10 in the Summit League, but with their doubleheader sweep over the ‘Roos on Saturday, the Jags still claimed their first conference series win of the season.
UMKC struck first in the bottom of the first inning using one hit, one IUPUI error and one walk to score two runs as it jumped on top 2-0.
Outside of an
Aundria Basquez single in the second inning and a Kesley Rupert single in the sixth, IUPUI did not receive another hit.
In the fifth, the Jags had a good opportunity to strike using two walks to place runners on first and second with two outs, but a strike out ended that threat.
Defensively,
Nikki Thomas kept the Jags in it giving up just two hits in three innings of relief, but the IUPUI offense just couldn’t string together a rally as it ultimately fell by a score of 2-0.
Rupert and Basquez claimed the only hits for the Jags, but
Jocelyn Oppenhuis and Thomas combined to give up just three hits in six innings of work.
The Jags are back in action on Tuesday, April 17, when they host Dayton for a mid-week doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
