FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IUPUI men’s tennis team traveled to Fort Wayne, Ind., in search of its second outright Summit League regular-season title, but IPFW took the doubles point and four of six singles matches to defeat the Jags, 5-2, Friday afternoon.
The loss dropped IUPUI to 9-14 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The loss dropped IUPUI into a tie with IPFW for first place in the Summit League standings at 4-1. UMKC still has three conference matches remaining but is tied with both the Mastodons and the Jags in the loss column.
In doubles action, the Jaguars top duo of #Patrick O’Neill
and Luke Bielawski# got IUPUI off to a great start claiming a tough 8-6 win, but the Jags could not salvage the doubles point falling by identical 8-3 scores at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
In singles play, the Mastodons were victorious at straight sets at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, but that was off-set by a
Deon Shafer straight-sets win at the fourth position making the score 3-1.
The final three matches all went to three sets and after dropping his opening set,
Louis Sacks battled back and dominated sets two and three by winning each set 6-1 to get the Jags within a point, 3-2, in the sixth spot.
Unfortunately for IUPUI, #Ivan Mojsejev
and Joel Modesitt# both came up just short in tightly decided third sets allowing IPFW to close out the 5-2 win.
The Jags return to action on Saturday, April 14, when they travel to Detroit, Mich., to square off with Detroit.
