Jags drop tight contest with Razorbacks before downing Drake

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The IUPUI softball team rebounded on the final day of the Woo Pig Classic splitting a pair of games against Arkansas and Drake. The Jags hung with the Razorbacks, 3-1, before downing the Bulldogs, 2-0.

With the Sunday split, IUPUI’s record moved to 5-10 on the season.

“We came out with better focus and more intensity today. We gave Arkansas a run for their money and we took advantage of Drake’s mistakes,” said head coach Maggie Calcaterra. “We still need to hit better, but it will come around. Our pitchers have done a great job of keeping us in games.”

IUPUI opened the day against the Razorbacks and both teams went scoreless through three innings until Arkansas opened the scoring with a pair of solo home runs in the fourth to go in front, 2-0.

Another solo round-tripper in the bottom of the fifth brought moved the Razorbacks lead to move their lead to 3-0, before the Jaguars made a final effort in the seventh.

Julie Love entered the game in a pinch-hitting situation and managed to plate Ashley Seering, cutting the IUPUI deficit to 3-1. The Jags had the tying run at the plate, but the Razorbacks were able to finish things off in the seventh to close out the win.

Alicia Brewer, Leah Prewitt, Seering, and Love each posted a hit for IUPUI and the Jags four hits outmatched the three for Arkansas, except for all three of the Razorbacks hits went for solo home runs.

IUPUI recorded just two hits, but those two hits went for extra bases resulting in two runs and Nikki Thomas shut down the Drake offense helping the Jaguars to a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs in the finale of the Woo Pig Classic.

The Jaguars used a solo home run by Jenny Royse and a wild pitch following an Ashley Seering triple to plate both of their runs, while Thomas went to work in the circle.

The sophomore right-hander gave up just four hits and three walks, while striking out six to emerge with her second complete-game shutout in the past two weekends.
