VERMILLION, S.D. – After combining to score nine runs in its last six games, the IUPUI softball team broke out for eight runs on 14 hits as it won the finale of a three-game Summit League set over South Dakota, 8-1, Saturday afternoon.

The win improved the Jaguars overall record to 8-20, while IUPUI’s conference mark moved to 2-7.

The Coyotes jumped out to the early 1-0 lead scoring a run in the bottom of the first, but the Jags took over from there.

In the second, Eryn Dillon started the inning with an infield single, before proceeding to score all the way from first base on a triple from Megan Cory. Two batters later, Aundria Basquez delivered a RBI single that plated Cory and put the Jags in front, 2-1.

The Jags tacked on another run in the third on a two-out, RBI single from Cory, before putting a three-spot on the board in the fourth.

The damage in the fourth started with one out when Nicole Checkie struck a one-out double to left-center field. Kelsey Rupert brought home Checkie with a RBI single to left-center, upping the Jags lead to 4-1. With Rupert standing on third and two outs, Jenny Royse belted a two-run homer to left field expanding the IUPUI lead to five runs, 6-1.

In the bottom of the fourth with two runners on and one out, Emili Escamilla entered the circle for the Jags and escaped the jam and went the rest of the way giving up just two hits.

The Jags tacked on two more insurance runs on a two-run Dillon double in the sixth to balloon the lead to 8-1, before Escamilla set down the Coyotes in order in the sixth and the seventh to finish off the 8-1 IUPUI victory.

Five Jags finished with multi-hit games, led by Checkie’s four-hit performance. The four-hit outing was the first of her career.

Royse, Dillon, and Cory each finished with two RBI.

Escamilla earned the win after giving up just two hits and striking out six in 3.2 innings.

The Jags are back in action on Thursday, March 29, when it hosts Indiana State at 4 p.m. for a doubleheader at the IUPUI Softball Complex.
